Is he a Savannah or Bengal

Savannah Kitten
Need the help of you veteran cat owners to tell me if I have a Savannah kitten or Bengal. I will post or send you any picture to help determine whether he is Savannah or Bengal. Long story short, I bought Saber from a local Savannah breeder and I've been told from a Vet that he believes the kitten is a Bengal not a Savannah. Needless to say, this is upsetting and if its true, I would like to call the breeder and ask for my money back. Thanks in advance for the help.

He looks like a Savannah to me... Do you have his TICA paperwork? You should have received his papers when you paid for him, unless he is not neutered. What generation is he?

We didn't pay for the TICA paperwork, and he is not neutered. He was sold to us as a F3.
His birthday is April 28, 2016. We took him to the vet last Friday, and he weighed 2.5 lbs (@ 8 weeks & 1 day old).

You don't have to pay for paperwork....you should have at least received a pedigree....8 weeks is very, very young for a kitten to leave its mother. We have dedicated an entire post to that topic: http://www.savannahcatchat.com/threads/why-savannah-kittens-should-not-leave-before-12-16-weeks.724/

Ask the breeder for the name of the kitten's mother and father...see if you can at least get a pedigree for your kitten.

Also, whether F3 or not, the kitten should be neutered when old enough. Do you know if the breeder has a TICA registered cattery?

My kittens were born on 4/15 and won't go to a new home until August...

Thinking we had to pay for the TICA registration is my ignorance not knowing. I thought it was like an AKC registration where you would typically pay more for a registered pet. I have made a couple attempts to contact the breeder but haven't had much success. I will attempt to call and email the breeder to ask about the parents and pedigree. Neutering Saber has always been the plan. At this point, I feel like I've been taken advantage of by a fly by the night breeder. Hopefully, Saber is a Savannah and its not a costly mistake.

I hope you were not taken advantage of...if we know who the breeder is, we can tell you...

I do not see Bengal but as Paige stated, it is impossible to tell for sure without papers. He does look a bit on the fuzzy side but that could be because he is only 8 weeks old.

It costs a tiny amount to register a litter of kittens hence the paperwork should not be something that is withheld. Some breeders might hold papers until proof of spay/neuter (if they don't spay/neuter before the kitten leaves), but there is no reason to not give papers to you if the parents of your kitten are registered.

Not only is it proof of what you purchased, as you now have doubts given your vet's reaction, but it can be important if your state or county decides to pass regulations only allowing a certain generation or further, you may need to prove what you have!

I would go back to the breeder and ask for papers. Hopefully this is just an omission and you can get the papers now.

I do think from those pictures that you do have a Savannah kitten, BUT I also see what your vet is seeing. It comes from the Savannah breed still being relatively young, the effect of the outcross breeds used in breed development can still sometimes be seen, and in some cases quite strongly. There is obviously Bengal heritage in your Savannah kitten. Don't worry, probably ~90% or more of our Savannahs have "some" Bengal in their pedigrees, if you dig far enough. It's possible that it is more recent with your kitten or he just got a bigger dose (you know how a kid sometimes looks more like a grandparent than they look like their parent?).

When the breeder said the kitten is F3 did they give an A, B or C after that? Do you know if daddy was a Savannah too, or might he be Bengal. Does the breeder also breed Bengals?

I'm not sure why your vet thinks your kitten is a Bengal, he looks like a Savannah to me. Having said that, I agree with Paige that eight weeks is terribly young to be leaving its mother, and it is worrisome that you are now unable to contact the breeder. On the other hand, sometimes people get busy and just take time to respond.

I noticed in your other post you mentioned Fort Bliss - is this considered TX or NM? I ask because Savannahs are banned in El Paso and although I realize an army post is considered to be under its own laws I have also been told it respects the laws of the region it is located in as well. This may be one of the reasons your vet 'encouraged' you to consider the kitten a Bengal since they are not illegal there, however if you are leaving the base to see a vet in El Paso you are driving through town with an illegal animal tri sad:
