Savannah Kitten
HI everyone, i recently joined the savannah cat chat and posted some things that people werent very fond of.... for example; i posted a link to my now non existing "GoFundMe" account which was basically trying to tell my story of how i've wanted a savannah since i was nine years old. a little on march 4th i drove 14 1/2 hours to alliance ohio to purchase my dream kitten (Luke) my savannah cat.
When i walked in, i realized it was a puppy mill. I figured i couldnt leave empty handed and i would save a kitten in my eyes...
Immidietly i noticed something was wrong with him. he twitched a lot, had the sniffles, was very jumpy, etc. reguardless, he was still the best cat i've ever had.
I've been an animal lover since i was young, in fact, animals are my love, my passion, theyre everything to me especially my Luke....
I took luke to the vet to get fixed and they were
very worried and knew something was wrong. a week later i found the love of my life, luke, dead.
The breeder i had bought him from sold me a sick kitten! :(
My birthday was june 17th and all i wanted was a new luke, which i finally found! well, some people on this page got very concerned that i was paying for this new kitten with donations (which i had never recieved) and even deleted the account. They then contacted my new breeder and convinced her not to sell this dream kitten to me..
So first id like to apoligize to anyone i offended or who got the wrong idea and misunderstood my intentions.
I have my own money, i am employed, and i've never been one to ask for handouts. ive had a job simce i was 13 and id say i've always been pretty independent... It was a friend of mine who convinced me to make a GOFUNDME account, which i regret ever doing so, but have learned my lesson from it.
I will admitt i was beyond devestated what happened to my Luke and felt as though the breeder should have compensated me for what she had done.
Im sorry if any of you thought i came off as angry, that is not the way i intended to sound.
Thank you for taking the time to read my story, and for the certain people that had shown compassion to me.
Sincerly, Janis ruiz

Janis, thank you for posting and explaining...you need to understand that the savannah community is a very tight knit one and people are very passionate about the breed...breeders are passionate about their kittens...when you put up a gofundme page, that sets up a red flag, that you cannot afford a kitten or to pay for pet care, etc.

Perhaps you will learn a bit from everyone here on the forum and be able to get another savannah kitten one day!

yes i have learned :) im on my search for one! like i said, it was a misunderstanding. i am employed, i can afford it on my own without donations, i think it was just in the heat of the moment after finding my poor kitty the way i did :(

It takes a lot to come back to a page where one initially made less than a good first impression...I commend you for that and offering more explanation for what was posted about your poor kitten....

That said, you did indeed learn a very hard lesson in the purchase of your first Savannah. You won't be the last, either. Anytime a kitten is purchased from a Craigslist ad, or from a "breeder" who has less than adequate and clean conditions for their animals, or has obvious sick kittens in the home for sale, does not have a website and no one else has ever heard of them...that should be an automatic red flag to walk away empty-handed...no matter how much your heart breaks or how far you drove or how much money spent already. Purchasing under those conditions only creates more demand for such breeders along with the unknown of how healthy a kitten will be once you bring him home.

This is why it is imperative to do as much research as possible before purchasing....join cat groups online and ask for referrals or recommendations from others who were happy with their kitten purchases. Take your time. Perhaps sometime in the future might be better for a new kitten to join you rather than now. Only you know that if you are ready for a new kitten now or in the future....

I think it very gracious of a person to be able to apologize for their past actions.

I think Pam said it all. Pam is part of our Savannah Rescue team, and we hate it when people call their kitten a "rescue" thinking because the breeder was a bad breeder they felt compelled to purchase it to "save" it. In reality you are encouraging and supporting bad breeders and those kitten/puppy mills you abhor.

If more people just walked out of those horrid places telling the person you would not buy from someone that kept their animals in such conditions...if then their sales were affected...then they might think twice. They can only continue these practices if people give them money.

GoFundMe has really lost its way... it should be for great causes but it's been overrun with pleas to help people fund vacations, honeymoons, kittens and puppies. No matter how much one might want such a thing, it's not appropriate. And in the case of the kitten, it tells breeders you can't afford the kitten hence you probably can't afford the care. And so if you want a kitten from a GOOD breeder next time... don't listen to a friend giving you bad advice. I understand the "everyone else is doing it, you might as well try" approach but you also need to think about what your actions say about the person you are, and as you have said this was not the kind of person that you feel that you are.

We all understand the enthusiasm for the breed, and wanting one sooner than later. But finding the right breeder and getting the right kitten from them sometimes takes time. You will have that pet for 15-20 years (or more) hence taking time to get it right is not such a bad idea... good luck!

i appreciate the advice again, but also, this new breeder who i was going to get my new kitten from is an excellent breeder, the only reason i didnt recieve the kitten was because people thought i was getting the kitten with donations, which i DID NOT recieve....
I understand where all of you were coming from, and i truly appreciate the advice and all the kind words from all of you :) I felt very ganged up on yesterday, and kind of crushed after everything but now i definetly understand all sides to every story.. thank you all again :)
As for the puppy mill, i've reported her twice but theres not much animal control or whomever can do because she has a long driveway with a gate at the end with no trespassing on it, so they cannot do any surprise visits on her :/

How about simply not buying from crappy puppy mill breeders? Educating your friends about those types of breeders and what to look for in a good breeder? Posting a review on Craigslist where you found the breeder? You have ways of helping stop her bad breeding practices-- it's just not as simple as a phone call.

People were concerned in regard to your GoFundMe. It screamed, "I made a poor choice and want to be rewarded for it by someone else buying me a new kitten!" It also said more quietly-- "I can't afford another kitten and therefore I probably cannot afford vet care."

Which then falls on the breeder's shoulders-- she would have the reputation of selling kittens to people who cannot afford them or their care.

If you could show the breeder fiscal responsibility-- since you deleted the GFM page-- perhaps she'd change her mind. But you really dropped her into a pot of scalding water when you didn't think through the ramifications of your post and what it insinuated to those reading it.

I am very sorry about your baby-- all in all-- and hope one day you'll find the perfect healthy baby to spoil for years to come.
