Mark, I can't imagine the touch pad stove! That sounds like a nightmare!

We have a gas stove, and the burners cool down pretty quickly, but the grills on top of them are cast iron. They do not cool down quickly. I will look into a cover for the stovetop, that is a good idea.
We do not have a pantry; when we bought our house, construction was already complete, so we did not have any say in the layout or design.

Our microwave is above-stove, so he can't get in there (yet); I have turned it into the bread box/potato chip box/cookie storage. I am less concerned about him stealing food than I am right now about him (a) stealing and ingesting the packaging for the food when it is in the fridge/cabinet/garbage can and (b) him burning himself. I am just worried about what would have happened if he had been as sick as he was on saturday and we had been at work. Has anyone tried in-cabinet garbage cans?

We do have knobs on our cabinets, I've been leaving things like canned goods and spices and other ingreedients in glass jars on the lower shelves, and more interesting food on higher shelves. I have a trip to Lowes in my future this weekend for kitty proofing supplies. I really don't want to go the new stove route if I can avoid it; the one that came with the house is only a year old.

Can I suggest this garbage can? I believe you can find it at either Home Depot or Target.

The snapping lid is secure enough to keep out all of my cats. I don't even bother with the foot pedal.

I've used that one... what we preferred was the metal bullet can with pedal. Even the beagle was unable to get into that...what we found harder with that one was remembering to put the latch on it all the time. With our newly renovated kitchen, we put the trash into a pull-out cabinet which is foiling the beagle and kitties also.

So far out kitchen is spared, our bedroom and master bath however is still under major attack by Layla. She has been in recon mode in the middle floor and has climbed our Italian special ordered curtain and snagged it on many places. We have a very large kitchen granite counter that Layla likes to lay on and watch us put groceries away as if she is taking notes where everything is placed. She has been watching sopranos with me, she sits on the subwoofer and watches for hours. The pantry was left open and I found her sitting and looking at shelves with food on them, I guess planning a sneak attack when I am not around. The dish washer has become her next target, she thinks she is a dish because while loading the dishwasher I end up unloading her.
