Viruses do not respond to antibiotics, but the secondary infections they can get will respond to antibiotics. If it was simply a URI then it would not be going on this long. Except if that URI was not treated with the correct antibiotic. Without a PCR you don't know what you are dealing with to treat correctly. I would not give anything else until you get PCR results so you can treat properly.

Oh, absolutely! We have just been giving them the immune supplement every other day and a single daily lysine chew, as suggested.

The PCR test is tomorrow afternoon. From looking online do they just do a couple swabs and then we should know it 1-3 business days?

Usually they swab the eye, nose and throat. Then usually it takes a few days to get the results as they have to send it out and and wait for the test to be done.

Yes, some swab the eye and throat, others swab the nose as well. Depending on where you're located and how close you are to the lab running the results (I think most use IDEXX but I have also used Zoologix as well) you should get the results back in 1-3 days, but your vet (or the front office staff) should know better how long the turnaround time is on the results.

Well the vet called today, the test showed she had a bacterial infection so the vet prescribed a Terramycin Ointment and Doxycycline for both of them. So hopefully they will start to get better!

I meant to ask the vet but its kinda minor and I was in hurry, should we keep giving them Lysine chews on top of the medicine?

What was the infection , Mycoplasma?
Typically lysine is only for Herpes treatment.

Lysine probably won't help much, but it won't hurt. I'd say if they like the chews keep giving them, if not then skip them.

Also make sure you let the breeder know the test results. Looks like they will need to do some testing of their own.

Absolutely, I actually emailed her right after that post!

Thanks for your help.

Exactly as above...the lysine chews won't hurt but won't help either. And glad you let the breeder know!

The doxycycline is going to be more effective for the Mycoplasma, you mention that the breeder had used azithromycin and it worked, it does on myco but not as well as doxy, so hopefully this will work. How long a course did they recommend for the doxycycline?

Glad you have your answer, and a solution. Doxycycline should treat both infections, in fact it is the antibiotic of choice with many of the most common bacterial infections.
