Let's Talk... The Pet Overpopulation 'Myth'

I firmly believe if Breeders held their babies long enough to spay/neuter them the entire populace would decline; I'm not a breeder, I've never had an inclination to mix a Chihuahua with a Great Dane but I have seen the results...unfortunately my "Idealistic" belief would not work because someone would still be out there mixing the species "just to see the results"...a natural fluke that works is not the same as throw a lion & a tiger in a cage & see a Ligor. Hmmm :uh oh: maybe I should stop using the keyboard today...lol.
Do you really believe legit breeders are for the most part making these crosses? Or owners who buy a chi and dane and don't alter them?

Even the doodle breeders and whatnot tend to have contracts nowadays.

The owners that crossbreed without a clue or care for all the health issues the resulting animals have to try to live with!

If the people are not registered to breed there should be a penalty for breeding. At least that way there would be less breeding & less people who would put their pets into rescue or worse. The more valuable something is (I assume) the better a buyer is likely to take care of it, the closer to Breed specifics the more likely a buyer is to get what they really want; Savannah= high energy; Mastiff= couch potato; both = loyalty with intelligence! <3

Crossing breeds and crossing species are two completely different things - if no one ever crossed breeds we wouldn't have the Serengeti, the Ocicat, the Cockapoo, the Labradoodle, etc. If no one ever crosses species we wouldn't have Savannahs, Bengals, Chausies, Safaris, Caracats, mules, etc.

I almost always alter my pet kittens before I send them out, but I know plenty of responsible breeders who don't - that certainly doesn't make them bad breeders. As it has been pointed out, it is not the pedigree breeders that is causing the reported pet overpopulation, it is the back yard breeders and irresponsible owners who don't take animal ownership seriously.

and that is my point, if left up to the REAL Breeders the pounds would be nearly empty, the animals would have a higher quality life with less unknown/unexpected health problems.
