Puppy: But I am so cute and adorable!
Cats: Meh. We are unimpressed!
:p

Yes, in this situation the cats have been the easy part. The puppy has been the real work, needing walks, play and potty training. One advantage of being supper cute is that friends are coming over to play with supper puppy. :)

You're welcome Sluggo!

The warden and I have been doing lots of research on this front, and she desperately wants a puppy. There's never any assurance that pets are going to get along no matter what you do. In nature, if they don't like someone, even of the same breed, they just stay away from them. Conversely, we jam them into our homes and expect them to get along or at least we think we can manipulate them to get along.

Imagine this, you provide me a list of your top 10 friends and I'll randomly pick one to move into your spare bedroom. There's an opportunity for this to work out fabulously and lots of opportunities for it to be a train wreck. Using any number of dog breed selectors available online, you can at least minimize the risk of failure.

It sounds like you have put a lot of work into educating yourselves on adding a dog. The biggest surprises for me are the amount of human time puppy needs and the energy level of this dog. I did work with the breeder to find the most compatible puppy for the cats and when I visited I chose the puppy that sat on my lap and wanted to be petted. All good, then bring him home and he needs multi walks every day and to be with me or someone for hours per day. It been good, but not a low energy relationship.

Good luck on your search for an addition pet.
