Hello all! I'm so happy to have stumbled upon this forum! My mother-in-law wanted some Savannah's after I had talked to her about them and she found a great deal here in Oklahoma. The breeder passed away and her granddaughter inherited her cattery and she had 30+ kittens to get rid of. She says all the mothers got pregnant around the same time. I felt bad for them though because the granddaughter has no interest in cats, she just wants to get rid of them as quickly as possible. So we don't have papers for any of them because she doesn't know where they are or doesn't know how to go about doing it. We picked up two to babysit until my mother-in-law can drive out to get them. Then she wanted another one and she offered to get me one for my birthday on St. Patty's Day. So we have six cats (two are domestic house cats I already owned) in our two pet limit apartment complex...I am so exhausted. Feeding time is insane.

Anyway, Lowkey is mine! He is a black smoke I believe. The woman said she thought she'd never get rid of him because he looks like a rat. I saw him and fell in love! He's very timid right now. We keep him and one of the females in our computer room. I feel so bad because he scratches at the door but I can't let him out because he'd just go under the couch or under the bed. I also can't let the female out because the seven month old male tries to mount her all the time! Lowkey is very vocal and I never know what he wants! He just meows to hear his own voice I think. He loves to play though! I can't wait for him to warm up to me and allow me to really pet him. It'll be better on Friday when the other three Savannah's are picked up. He's hard to snap pictures of because he won't let us get close enough. I try to spend a lot of time in there with them since the others get to roam around the rest of the apartment. All of them are friendly except little Lowkey!

Welcome to savannahcatchat.com, Patrycja! Wow, that is an interesting and rather sad story....but glad you were able to rescue some of the savannahs from her granddaughter, who obviously cares nothing about them.

Sounds like little Lowkey just needs to adjust, so the more time you spend with him, the better! talk to him and play with him...we have a great discussion on this here: http://www.savannahcatchat.com/threads/making-progress.295/ and many other discussions on this subject.

There are experienced owners and breeders here that will be able to help and guide you and answer questions...so just ask away!

Awww, poor Lowkey! Sounds like he will adjust though and you have a great attitude about it! I am stunned and kinda disgusted about the whole situation in which you picked him up from, but am so glad you saved some babies from that situation! Are the new cats altered yet or is that in the works?

Trish - By altered do you mean fixed? None of them have been. My mother-in-law was thinking of breeding them. Our little boy will be fixed as soon as he is able!

Kronos - I honestly have no idea what generation Lowkey is! Is there a way to tell when he gets older? By his size and weight perhaps? I meant to ask the granddaughter about it but in the excitement of getting the "ugly" one as she puts it, I totally forgot. I don't even think she would know to be honest!

Kronos - I honestly have no idea what generation Lowkey is! Is there a way to tell when he gets older? By his size and weight perhaps? I meant to ask the granddaughter about it but in the excitement of getting the "ugly" one as she puts it, I totally forgot. I don't even think she would know to be honest!

When you are able to get some good shots we can give you an educated guess. Try to get some close ups of his face front on and the profile, and then some whole body shots while he is standing if you can!

Yes, I mean fixed. Honestly- unless your mother-in-law enjoys a house reeking of stud pee- and they will pee on anything- and so will unaltered females going through heat cycles- she really needs to get them fixed asap. Also, from the sounds of it- I would be concerned about inbreeding cats obtained in this situation. Without papers, there would be no way to know anything about the parentage of said kittens. Plus, female cats are not like dogs- they will cycle back to back to back and unless they are bred, they can easily develop pyometra, which is basically an uterus full of pus that can kill your cat. Just something for your M-I-L to think about. Realistically, as an actual exhibitor, breeder, and rescue volunteer, if someone isn't trying to help the breed by breeding- they should fix their pets

But anyways- getting your boy altered would help him settle in too. I can't wait to see pictures of him! We have a smoke female we just love here...

Thank you for the information. I'll have to let her know and tell her to do some more research before she decides. I don't think she knows what she's in for. I've always fixed my animals! Breeding is interesting to me but I don't think I could really do it. MIL has been breeding Newfoundlands for a little while but the dogs have a massive enclosure outside so they don't mess up the house.

I've been trying to find some images on smoke Savannahs but I pretty much come up with nothing! Are smokes not as popular?
