Meet Cirilla

I'm very nervous and excited to have my first Savannah! Cirilla is a 10 week old F2 female. I wish I would have read the thread about not bringing them home sooner than 12 weeks before but I'm hoping this doesn't cause a serious problem :( I have her quarantined in my room with any hiding places blocked. She seems to love the cat tree and will play with me slightly with a feather toy, but she does hiss any time I come close.

My advice for Cirilla is to give her some space. She needs to get bored and want to seek you out. There's a balance between not allowing too many hiding places and offering some sort of cave for her to sleep in that she feels secure in. Also, when you are not in your room maybe put a radio or TV on so that she has some ambient noise. A completely quiet house can be a bit disconcerting and promote anxiety, especially for a kitten taken away from everything she knows.

All excellent advice, thank you! I've gone ahead and made a fort for her with a bed and her cat tree has a cave as well. I'll also definitely keep the tv on while I'm at work. She was eager to play and eat today when I came home and sniffed me a few times. I'll just let her do her thing. And of course I'll keep updating with pictures :)

Congratulations on your new baabCirilla is an adorable little sweetie! Providing her with a cat tree where she can be up high, and a 'cave' for her to retreat to when she feels the need to get away will both help her gain confidence and help her settle in. I can't wait to see more pictures!

Thanks for the advice everyone. I had heard that savannahs require patience and last night I found out why. Ciri seemed to be eating and playing very well with me when I came home. after a few hours of letting her be and watching tv in the room she began meowing constantly. Then she would try and climb on anything she possible could (they are impressive climbers!) She meowed and was going crazy all night long. After a few hours I had to sleep in another room just so I could get some sleep. She was happy to eat and play a little this morning, she is still cautiously sniffing me while I'm close to her playing and eating.

Realize that studies have shown that while we are out of the house (at work for example), cats and dogs tend to sleep a lot of that time...so when you come home they want to interact. For a high energy breed of kitten, that can mean that they've stored some crazy amounts of energy!

Maybe a couple of vigorous play sessions during the evening, the last before you wish to sleep, then feed her something yummy and lights out. Hunt, eat, sleep!
