Metronidazole Side Effects

We got our 2 furbabies 2 months apart. Jammu tested negative for giardia. Then 2 months later, Rafiki tested positive. We treated her but not him. With the next vet appointment, we redid the tests and both came back positive. Either Rafiki gave the Jammu giardia who then gave it back or the parasite was in a stage that shows false positives for Jammu's initial test. The water in Los Angeles was showing high levels (but not high enough to affect humans and trigger an announcement) and we were giving them filtered water at the time so it is highly likely that they contracted it at my house and not the breeders. Either way, we had to treat both cats. Jammu had the full drool with the Metronidazole. It was hideous. But some cats react even worse than that....with neurological symptoms. We have switched the cats to bottled water so hopefully we will never go thru this again but we would treat with something other than Metronidazole.

The "p" powder was likely Panacur (fenbendazole is the drug name, Panacur the brand name), it's what I prefer to use for Giardia. The powder is generally tasteless but the liquid easy enough to give also. Metronidazole is much different! I avoid ever having to give that to a cat...

Find out if you HAVE to give Rabies...not everywhere requires it, and sometimes if the vet agrees that your cat has adverse reactions to vaccines they can sign a form exempting them too. Here in CA state law doesn't require rabies, but some cities and counties do. I'm not required to vaccinate mine for Rabies for example, but I do vaccinate the ones that travel to cat shows with me, both in case there is an accident in public and a bite occurs, and because we might travel to a location that does require Rabies so it is just simpler to have them vaccinated then.

It's a hassle to have to keep bringing them back but if you yourself are not satisfied your kitten is well, don't be pressured into agreeing to vaccinating them. It won't hurt their vaccination schedule to be put off for a week or two...

I'm going to take him to his appointment but he will not be receiving his 3rd shot yet. They are worth the back and forth as long as it helps him feel better, Tigger does not mind car rides!! Thank you for the advice on holding off, I'll feel better waiting until he feels better. Tigger is just starting to get back to normal but still not playing like he did before the Metronidazole, it'll be a week Monday we stopped it. I pray he gets back to normal! I will never ever in my life allow him to take that medicine again!!! The research I've been doing on it shows that many cats have had ill side effects and some worse than Tigger with it. I'm not sure why it's even still allowed to be given to cats

Rabies Is required in IL. Plus I think I would rather be safe than sorry with the rabies vaccination but will do them separately.

Does anyone know of a recent study I can pass on to my vet about Secnidazole? She's says she's looked into it but it appears not to be as effective as metronidazole for treatment of giardia which my kitten has according to the PCR test.

Just a update. My heart was broken! We find out the entire time we thought it was a reaction to the Metronidazole it was not, it was the start of Wet FIP. Tiggers abdomen started swelling 6/10 so I rushed him to the Vet, he did an ultra sound, removed fluid to test, ran blood tests and results all came back positive. The vet informed us at that visit he thought it was Wet FIP, the Vet said he should have caught it with his fever and the blood test we ran when Tigger first became sick . I never heard of FIP before, now I know all about both forms.

Tigger was the reason we adopted Ziggy because we fell in LOVE with him and the breed. We also thought it would be great to have a second and have them grow up together. We had Tigger for 2 months and 4days when we had to put him to sleep . I understand it may not mutate in Ziggy but he now has the Coronavirus and I'm afraid if I get another kitten I will put them in jeopardy.

Tigger was a gift to me from my husband to cheer me up...I was diagnosed with breast cancer the beginning of the yr and right after the diagnosis we had to put my domestic tabby Tiny to sleep from cancer as well, he was 17. My heart is just broken, it aches, Tigger was by my side everyday I came home from treatment...I pray he is in a better place and is playing with Tiny.

I'm so, so sorry, Stephanie... About everything! I'm sure Tigger is in a better place and pain free!

95% of all cats have been exposed to corona, so I really would not worry about it. 1% approximately convert to FIP. Please don't be afraid to get another, if that is what you want.

Not sure what else to say! I hope you are ok and we are here for you!
