My cat might have FIP

Frances, I know how difficult it is to have to wait and not know what is wrong, and have no idea what, if anything can make Tilly better. I hope you get some answers soon!

So Tilly is back home since Friday afternoon.
Nursing her. Making her swallow all her pills is the battle but we managed so far.
She knows she is at home now and relaxed. She was so stressed on Friday and so lost !
She asks for food in the morning, crying cry ! But does not eat much. She stays next to the Aga on her bed during the day and in her little hut in the bedroom at night.
We are waiting for results from the biopsy of the eye. It could take a week or more.It has been send to Liverpool.Unfortunately the lab won't perform the pathology unless they get more cases to analyse. (a bit shocking ,no?)
We still don't know if the inflammation of the nose cavity is bacterial or viral. (Coronavirus )
So quite a few tests still pending.
They really think it is FIP but need to make sure it is not Lymphoma.
I have not been able to take her temperature. She looks a bit better but today her right eye or underneath looks a bit swollen and the eye is running a bit.
Appointment at the vet tomorrow at 12.
The sample for PK Deficiency came back ,she is a carier only. Should I mention this to her breeder? Her brother is now a Stud in their cattery...
Should I mention she is sick now as well? I know they will be very defensive as they were when she had a runny tummy when she was 4 month old.
All the team in hospital have been very supportive, as our vet .He was so please I took her home.
The team thinks Tilly came across Coronavirus at a young age and fighting with diarrhoea her cells did not make it through.
So , that is were we are now.
Thanks again it is great to be able to communicate with you and get some support.
I have been reading lots of things on the web .
The info from Niels.c.Pedersen and Catvirus.com from Doctor A.Addie were very helpful to understand the disease and to help which direction to go.
:-o:cat::cry:
I agree, it IS shocking that the lab in Liverpool will only run your kitten's biopsy when they have other samples to analyze! I have never heard such a thing, I am so sorry.

Are you using an ear thermometer to try to monitor her temperature or trying the more accurate rectal thermometer? Although the rectal is more accurate, I have a number that they'd have to be practically dead before four people could hold them down to achieve that! The ear thermometer is usually possible though and a pretty good gauge... it's the same one you buy for children...

Absolutely, you should tell your breeder about the PK Deficiency result!

And YES, you should let the breeder know of this illness. They could well have some advice, but they also need to be aware that one of their kittens may have FIP, or something else that is obviously very dire.

I'll continue to cross paws here that something works with Tilly and she can improve and have a good kitty life .

Frances, you and Tilly are in our thoughts.
Last winter, I had a sick kitten on my hands, and he made a full recovery. I hope the same for Tilly.
When our little boy was sick, his breeder was in frequent communication with me by email and cell. I can't imagine how hard this is for you, but even if your breeder is not being helpful, I agree with Deb that you should still try to reach out.
Sending hugs your way,

Back from vet. Blood tests done Tilly has not improved ,the results are worse than last week.
I was told to try the steroids for a few days.
Is it wrong or right?
I am just waiting for the result of the eye biopsy before I put her down. ( they could take a week to come back)
But it is getting really hard.

Steroids could help... with anything that has a suspected immune component, steroids are a great tool. I would probably try them while waiting for the test results... so hard for you to be waiting like that.

As the vets wait, are they trying to think of other alternative diagnoses? I found my vets did when Zari was ill, it was great how they brainstormed. Months later, I saw another vet at the practice (not my regular one who was not there that day) and he told me how involved he'd gotten in reading reports and discussing it. It was touching to me that although Zari's case had been transferred to a specialist they were keeping updated (the specialist hospital sends over updates) and still thinking out for her.

My vet was thinking about homeopathy...
But they did not mention it this pm...
Making Tilly take the clindamycin is terrible, the pill (gelule) is really big . Tonight I opened it in a strong Almo Nature fish wet food, so much powder in that thing(!) , she started coughing when trying it.
So it does not work. This pill is so big that if it is swallowed the wrong way I am sure it can hurt the tissues in her throat.
I am going to mail the hospital to see if we can skip it.
She had an injection of Amoxillin which should last 10 days in her system.
The good thing is that she cries for food, she passes urine and feces and sleeps on her beds.
So... Where are we ,not too sure ?!
Near the end probably.
The vet team have all been very interested in her case so far.
AH ! Don"t know what else to do before those biopsy results come!

Is there a compounding pharmacy for the clindamycin? Here in the US we can get it as both liquid and pill form... but also when the dose is larger, a compounding pharmacy can usually make it into a nicer flavored liquid or even treat form...

Often it is because having it compounded is more expensive, hence they dispense the pills and wait to see if the cat tolerates it.... so definitely ask!
