Need advice on adopting a 6 year old male f1 !!

Thank you for great responses. He is on day 3 of the 2-week quarentine. I can not get that close to him yet. He is still so scared.

Be aware that he may need quarantine for longer than the standard 2 week period...basically you want him to form a bond to you so if he needs 3 or 4 weeks in a room to get bored enough to get interested in getting to know you, he just may have to stay there...

I wanted to ask your advice about having my husband or I sleep in his room during the quarentine period? Good or bad idea? Also, we are thinking that we are going to create a safe room for my almost-17 year old cat when Jaxson's out of quarentine. My old cat still has no idea that there is another cat in the house. She has arthritis & never goes upstairs. I don't think she can smell anything anymore, lol

I might give him a few more days on his own. Maybe start with spending an hour or two at a time in the room, just quietly reading or watching tv or whatever. It's a good idea to have some noise in his room, a radio or television as I find if it is too quiet cats get jumpy and anxious... so background noise can be helpful.
But yes, sleeping in his room may help as he can come check you out when you are asleep, don't be surprised if you open an eye and there's a kitty breathing in your face!

Have to say...he probably was just warming up... he's hardly taken any nibbles from that box and that blind is still kinda together! LOL!

Here is a pic of how we rigged the door knob with my daughters 2 crutches.

I don't think that will hold him off for too long --- just a bit of jiggling on the doorknob will likely knock those crutches off the handle...

I think sleeping with him is a great idea - it gives him a 'margin of safety' for checking you out while you're asleep without worrying what you might do to him. However, as Brigitte says, starting with just an hour or two at a time may work better and give him more time to become accustomed to your presence.

I also think it's a great idea to provide Jaxson with a safe room once the F1 (what's his name?) is allowed out of his room.

I agree with Brigitte - he's just dipping his paw into the waters to see how it is... brace yourselves for more mischief and destruction...

Keep an eye on the floor vent, cats seem to find these to be a very convenient and inviting place to pee into.
