This really hits home. I also had cats in the past, including my Simba who had PU surgery after several bouts of crystals, when my Dante was diagnosed with idiopathic cystitis (yeah, stupid non-diagnosis and if someone EVER said that to me again, I'd punch them). Since I had had a cat with severe problems before, I thought I knew what to do for Dante, but nothing worked. Every time I thought we were close to solving the problem, he'd prove me wrong. After 3 years, I finally got up the courage to rehome him. According to his new person, he hasn't peed out of the box even once. I miss him like crazy, but there is something about my home he didn't like, and he's happier now.
I don't say this to convince you to give up, but instead to maybe try to look at the picture from a different angle. At such a young age they can't be a lost cause, but even though you're an experienced pet owner sometimes an outside opinion is helpful to see something you haven't seen yet. (for some reason Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy comes to mind)
