Neutering

I just called the vet he's been seeing...they gave me a range where the low end is $325...OMG, I might as well take him to the holistic vet for that price! I can't believe it. I even asked are you sure? and she seemed certain....

For my regular vet, $300 was out of reach for a neuter, so I did a lot of digging around to find a low cost spay/neuter clinic in my area. I found a few places that would do it for $40 and I was sure to spent a lot of time asking questions of the staff and my regular vet making sure I was comfortable with the decision. For spaying a female it makes more sense to spend more since the surgery is much more invasive. But for a neuter, literally all they do is snip the cord? inside of the testicles (I'm sure there is an actual term for this that I am just forgetting). It is such a tiny incision, that it requires no stitches. I still got pain meds for Keljin just in case, but he was totally himself and came home the same day. The hardest part was to keep in confined to the bathroom to try to keep him from NOT jumping and playing rough. He was totally fine and it was easy :)

In total I spent $40 on the neuter, $20 on a microchip, and $15 for pain meds. Total: $75 and well worth it! In my opinion spay/neuter clinics specialize in these procedures, and males are much easier so I think you should be fine looking at lower costing options.

I had Keljin done at 4 months old and I noticed no personality change whatsoever. If anything I kind of think he became even more of a love bug after the procedure :) Hope the information helps for Duma!

Thanks everyone. The reason I asked is that I thought it was a super simple procedure--and it certainly seems consensus! The SPCA clinic has no worse reviews than any of the other places around and will cost half to 1/3 of the local places, plus they probably do thousands more than any of the other vets. Based on what you guys say and my friend that suggested I go there in the first place, I filled out their form and they're supposed to get back to me today for an appointment. I feel so much better about this decision. It's not really about "going with the cheapest" because of course I want the best care possible for my boy but at the same time I can't see spending so much money for something that is relatively simple.

lol Brehart, I can't imagine he could be more of a love bug, but that sounds great!

Neuters are so easy. I have known a tec that would do them as they are nearly bloodless and almost non- surgical. That was illegal however and not at the clinic I worked for. They do not require a general anesthetic, or should not. A competent vet is fine for such a procedure. I don't feel it should cost $300 unless the cat had underlying health issues and special needs which Duma does not have. :)

Interesting--there is an SPCA neuter clinic not far from here, a friend swears by them, and I bet they probably do a lot of them. But I feel kinda silly bringing a purebred to them... They charge $60.

Don't feel silly. They have tons of experience and are super to work with! Some frown at me because they figure out that I'm a breeder and of course there are so many Savannahs in the shelters. But others are not so AR brainwashed and I always donate an extra 5.00 or 10.00 in hopes that it will help someone without the means to get their pet altered.

A neuter is a very minor procedure. They barely have to be anesthetized. Depending on where you are located it should cost between $50 - $200. I would just have your regular vet do it.

I agree Lori. Those clinics who do the highest volume of spays and neuters are often also the most competent in performing them as they do them a lot.

Where ever you choose to go..I am sure everything will be fine. Neuters are simple and the males are back to there normal activity rather quickly. Pure breeds or mixed breeds all look the same to the vet that will be doing the neuter...it will be done the same way regardless of the breed. Just go where you feel the most comfortable with the vet. I am sure the results will be the same.

Simba is 10 months old, I'm going to get him done next month. He needs to get a hernia taken care of at the same time. I waited on the neutering to see if the hernia was going to go away or not.
