What was the "liquid antibiotics" given for the Coccidia? If it was Albon (sulfadimethoxine) then it may not have been effective. It's an older medication still commonly in use but is only bacteriostatic rather than actually killing the coccidia...the idea is that it halts the growth of coccidia so that the animal's immune system can deal with it. There is a newer medication, Ponazuril, you need to have from a compounding pharmacy usually, but it is way more effective. http://www.wedgewoodpetrx.com/learn...horse-owners/ponazuril-for-dogs-and-cats.html

Without knowing if the coccidia has been treated effectively, you can't rule that out and move on to investigating IBS.

My suggestion is to ask for the ponazuril to treat the coccidia, and if that is not effective either, to do a fecal PCR test to look for other infectious causes.

So, about a month ago I asked for some help with my male F4 Savannah. We adopted him November 19, and since has had terrible diarrhea. I've bought purina hard food for sensitive stomach, he's been to the vet twice. Once he tested positive for Coccydia (spell?) and received a weeks worth of liquid antibiotics. No use, so he went back and this time the vet thought it was feline IBS and prescribed another round of pill broad spectrum antibiotics to clear up any possible parasites and a weeks worth of steroids. Well, Simba stopped having accidents and started using his litter box for #2 more often but it did NOT stop the diarrhea. Does ANYONE have any suggestions or experience with feline IBS? This cat is miserable and nothing we are doing is helping.
Did you ever try the S Boulardii I suggested before? It is good for diarrhea of any cause, but especially helpful long term for IBS in both humans and cats. You can see more abut probiotics here: http://catcentric.org/care-and-health/probiotics-for-cats-why-which-ones-and-how-to-use-them/

Have you used this particular brand? How did you administer it? it looks like pretty big capsules, just wondering if you broke them open?
Yes I do for myself and my cats. It was in my post "One capsule emptied into his food twice a day should help stop the diarrhea, regardless of the cause. You can also get it in a local store under the name Florastor, but that version contains a small amount of lactose. I've been told the Walmart version does not contain lactose."

I agree with Brigitte that if you haven't already run a diarrhea PCR you need to do that to make sure you're not missing an infection.

IBD is most commonly diagnosed by biopsy and treated with steroids and antibiotics.
