I just received an email from Sue and she thinks she has 3 queens pregnant! she is hoping for 3 litters! Wahoo! I want to be fully prepared. what are the best or necessary toys I need to have ? and I really am concerned about what I need to feed them. What do you feed yours?That is exciting! There are several of us here who have her cats although a lot of the others don't post anymore. I hope it all works out for you.
My husband is a hunter Can I grind up the left over deer and feed ii? Have you heard of the raw freeze dried food? is it ok? My pet store here sells it. I will do a varietyMy domestic cat eats mostly canned food. What about left overs? like grilled chicken or meatloaf? Veggies or rice? are those things ok? also, how much and how many times a day? Thanks so much for all you help and advice! and... I am sure sue will be a wealth on knowledge!Feather wands and any toy that the cat can bat around. When they're kittens, they like almost anything. I spend a fortune on toys I think my boys will like and they decide to rip up a newspaper and chase around the paper bits. Cardboard boxes are a huge hit also -- fun for hide 'n seek and to chew into a zillion pieces. If you don't own a good vacuum, you'll need to get one
You should feed the kitten the same food Sue is feeding for a few weeks and then slowly transition it to whatever food you choose to feed. Sue feeds raw, cooked chicken, and kitten kibble. (I think she feeds chicken. I remember cooking up batches of boneless chicken thighs to feed with the kibble.) She starts the kittens on a variety of food types to give owner's a choice if they're not comfortable feeding a raw diet. My cats eat a whole prey diet consisting of mice, rats, chickens, quail, guinea pigs as well as meat chunks such as beef, pork, buffalo, rabbit and whatever else I can find that I think will keep them interested. I get most of the whole prey from rodentpro.com and the unusual meats from hare-today.
An excellent site with an overwhelming amount of information about nutrition is catinfo.org. I strongly recommend that you read through it and decide what you are comfortable feeding for the long term. The only recommendation I'll make is to avoid kibble. Feeding an excellent quality canned is better all around for the cat than any kibble diet.
So you can decide among:
1. Commercially prepared canned food and you can choose to add some raw meat chunks to the canned for variety;
2. Raw diet -- either commercially prepared or you can make it yourself. See info here: https://feline-nutrition.org/nutrition/easy-raw-feeding-for-the-busy-person If you choose to prepare a raw diet yourself, you'll have to invest in a meat grinder that can handle medium to large bones;
3. Whole prey.
@DumaLove has great info on her site https://nitrokatzsavannahs.com/feline-nutrition.html. And you also can check out her gorgeous cats. Eye candy.
The other strong recommendation I have is to make sure you feed a different variety of food regardless of which type of diet you choose. Cats may easily tire of eating the same thing all the time and can develop allergies to foods. Pet food companies may change ingredients and the cat may hate the change. If you keep rotating through brands or foods that you prepare, the chances of running into problems lessens.
Yes, you can feed it if you're sure the deer is free from wasting disease. And if you feed it in addition to canned or another balanced food, you don't have to add anything to the deer. If you plan to feed the deer as a major portion of the diet, you must be sure it has the proper meat/bone/organ ratio.My husband is a hunter Can I grind up the left over deer and feed ii?
Thanks so much. I read the feeding post and I am glad I have time to figure it all out!LolYes, you can feed it if you're sure the deer is free from wasting disease. --Freeze fried food such as Stella & Chewy's is fine.
--Grilled chicken is ok as a treat as long as it doesn't have bones. Cooked bones of any kind are dangerous for the cat to eat.
--Leftovers can be tricky. If you add onion, garlic, or any spices to the meat, I wouldn't give it to the cat. Onions and garlic are poisonous to cats.
--Cats are obligate carnivores. Their digestive systems are not designed to handle veggies and rice so while they might eat those foods and perhaps even like those foods, that stuff isn't beneficial for them. The only time rice should be fed is when a cat may have digestive issues involving diarrhea and then only given to them on a limited basis.
Kittens should be fed as much as they can eat 4x a day. Morning, noon, dinner hour and right before bed. 3x a day is ok if you're not home for the noon feeding, just increase the amount for each meal. You'll know you're feeding enough if there's some food left over. The cat will likely eat an enormous amount for the first year and should gain approx. 1 lb a month during that time.
As I suggested earlier, read the links I posted in my prior post and you'll get lots of info to guide you.
