newbie with a f1 stunner called coco

coco

Savannah Super Cat
Hi everyone

glad theres somewhere where i can seek advice and see pictures of this beautiful breed

Ive a f1 called coco, shes 5 months old now and shes absolutely stunning, her personality is totally different than a normal cat

I have a dog called Rufus and i can liken her personality to his, always by my side and getting involved in everything

so fat this month in my attempt at savannah proofing my house ive to done the following

New taps that cant be turned on - she loved doing this but it was a flood risk
new door handles - again to stop her opening every door in the house, mainly the bedroom one as she likes to pounce my feet in the middle of the night
a fantastic enclosure outside with a micro chipped cat flap
a mcclaw cat wheel - great for burning of excess energy
and finally a indoor letterbox cage as she likes to wait for the postman and shred the post

haha, i have never had a child however i expect its similar.... however the breed is amazing and im so glad shes in my life :)

shes got a new cat jacket this week so i can look forward to daily walks in the countryside with her after shes got used to the lead :)

Sounds like she's been keeping you busy! LOL!

Can I ask why the cat flap needed to be a microchipped one if it leads to the enclosure?

haha she has ;-)

its mainly so my springer spaniel cant try getting thru it as its in the living room and im pretty sure his fatty bum would get stuck, also it allows me to program it to keep her in once shes come in for the night ( it has a one way feature/programme etc that i set before going to bed )...........that way i dont have to go get her every morning as its getting cold in the UK now and she loves it outside in her play area but its below 0 degrees most days now :-( )

here she is a few months ago

shes a beauty but she knows it!!!! and for a f1 shes been pretty handleable ( until this month )

she started stalking me round the house this week which is funny ( and painful ) and recently seems a lot less handleable, but shes growing up and that seems to be a common thing with savannahs as they get more mature :)

lol :)

I think with F1s it is important to be persistent in handling them as they go through their "teenage" period so that they remain handleable... possibly more than any other generation of Savannah.

In terms of the cat door, I have a solid door that slots into the structure if I wish to keep them in or out...but then I don't mind if my beagle goes out into the enclosed backyard and it is big enough so that he can (as well as my 62.5% F1 who is really a large cat)...

good advice about continuing to handle them, thats my plan.......... shes always been very good with that i think

its just recently shes developed her hunting instinct which was always going to happen :)

and bless my little rufus but hes always been a bit too big for the catflap, actually im worried coco may be in a year or 2, and i cant seem to find any good sized ones

actually a door leading into it is an option and sounds like a good plan if she ends up being a big lady

thanks again for the advice :)

I found the cat flap I have here online, http://www.moorepet.com/ , as I needed one to work with the french door we have going into the backyard (which is fully enclosed). You choose the size so I could find the one that would work best.

I think you mentioned Coco's "hunting instinct" which is I think reasonably common in kittens especially if they do not have another kitten or cat to wrestle and play with...then you are it! It's most definitely not to be encouraged, you have to remember that what you find cute now is not cute when they are five times that size... and what is tolerable to you may not be tolerable to a family member, a guest, a guest's small child etc.
