We didn't instal a garbage disposal unit in our newly remodeled kitchen, just safer not to have one I figured with the Savannahs. We don't tend to use them in Australia so I was not so accustomed to using it so not an issue for me to forego that appliance...
Our new kitchen has a groovy little flip out drawer just under the sink to store the sponge...so useful with Savannahs! Our kitchen designer thinks it hilarious that he designed our kitchen "for our cats"...so many features were done with them in mind...LOL!

Jarvis and Diablo are pretty good about staying off the counter. Jarvis is good about staying off the counter because he just has to stand on his hind legs, and he can reach a fair amount of it. Diablo on the other hand is the easiest of the three kitties to train, he understands that he is not allowed up there, and only rarely (twice a week) does he break the rule.
Mickey, on the other hand, gets on the counter every night. He is not afraid of being tossed on the floor, and he is not afraid of water, and loud noises don't make him jump down. . . we have lost the battle to keep Mickey off of the counter. We are still fighting rear guard (mostly because he walks on the stove too and I am afraid he will hurt himself).
We have definitely come home to kittens in the light fixtures. However, the most interesting place Diablo has gotten himself on to was not the door (which he has done) or the molding on top of the windows (last summer) or the ductwork in the basement, or hanging from the light fixtures, but the day he balanced on the 1/2" glass of our new 205 gallon rimless aquarium . . . which was full of water.

If you want my advice, pick up some of the small felt dots made for the bottoms of furniture that are rounded and have a small adhesive back to them that won't damage wood or paint.
Once they start opening things and jumping, you are going to want a few of these placed at the corners of cabinets doors, and anything that swings for easing your nerves. If you don't want them in there, get earthquake style latches you hook a fingertip in behind the cracked cabinet to get them open.
My brother innocently asked me are we going to have to move the plants? I don't know if it was palming my forehead or my shoulders shaking in laughter that gave it away. I simply said, oh plan on it grinning like a Cheshire cat.
Disabling the garbage disposal and hiding the rubber flaps that sit in the drain which my boy Ra was obsessed about removing for months are now added to my "proofing" to do list.
To this very day, there's not a month goes by where I'm not scared out of my wits at a cat landing from out of nowhere with a crash on top of the shower doors (7ft high) when I'm not looking or have my eyes closed taking a shower. Who needs coffee?

Fortunately, mine stay out of the cabinets. Mayhem does jump on top of the shower doors, which scares the cr@p out of me. Rascal will bolt out the back door going after a chipmunk, he really hates them and is on a mission to eradicate them. He will pass the catnip plants if he is on to a chipmunk. The good news, is if he gets one, he gleefully runs back to the door to show us. The day the brothers went out the upstairs window, I am fairly sure they saw a chipmunk below and made an airstrike.

Maybe temporary, but we'll see. Louie is afraid of one noise in my house, and one noise only.....................you guessed it.............the garbage disposal. So when he jumps onto the stovetop (better foothold there) to get to the counters, I quickly turn on the garbage disposal, which scares the shlt out of him. Only had to do it twice. He's stopped going up there for now.
If you haven't read Life Of Pi then you ought to. It gives a pretty darn good insight into the way cats think. Probably stuff most of you knew already, but still a great read if you love big cats.

Leyla's second day home she figured out the island stools gave easy access to the island. Taking those away only encouraged her to figure out other ways to get there...straight from the kitchen floor or, if she really wants to send me spinning, flying across the room from her tree to the tower. It won't be long before she figures out how to get on the top of the cupboards, so we've resigned ourselves to getting some sort of run set up for her over the cupboards through the kitchen and living room.
