Preparing for Savannah Kitten - New to Savannahs

Hello!

I have put a deposit down on an F3 male kitten and am set to receive him in the next two or three weeks. I am new to the Savannah breed, but am extremely excited for him to come home! Due to my lack of experience, I am turning here (as well as researching daily) for information. I have read up on most things concerning a new Savannah kitten, as well as the proper way to introduce them to my other cats. I would love to hear any advice anyone has for a new Savannah owner in my specific situation.

There are two male cats in the house currently; one 16 year old Siamese, and one 6 year old DSH. The Siamese is the more dominant one and is very intelligent. He is extremely demanding, as well as sensitive to who gets the most attention. The DSH is skittish and very mild mannered. He is a cutie and has a few quirks, but I believe the kitten introduction will be easy with him. My question is if there is anything that I can do to make the introduction easier, outside of the generic quarantine and showing both the older cats and the kitten towels with the opposite's sent? I am concerned that my Siamese will be troublesome.

I am also pretty unclear about the raw diet. I definitely want to feed my kitten a raw or partially raw diet (his breeder is currently doing so), but I am not sure exactly how I should be preparing his food. What are some good sources for finding recipes? Should I buy a blender or processor that is intended only for his food? I intend to ask the breeder more questions when it gets sooner to the date, but I have been asking them a significant number of questions on a weekly basis.

Please let me know if there are any other things that I should prepare for the kitten.

Hi and welcome to the forum! There is a wealth of information here, and it sounds like you have done some good research in preparation for your new family member. I think as far as introductions are concerned, each experience is usually an individual process so you may just need to see how your Siamese reacts during general introductions before you can figure out what your next steps will need to be. One common method of introducing two cats when there is concern that one will become aggressive is to erect a screen door between rooms and keep them separated that way where they are able to see, smell, and visit with each other without being able to physically interact together. You can feed them on each side of the door, and play with them together in front of the door (if there is more than one human available) as well.

As for the raw, this is definitely information you should get from your breeder since it is always best to keep the kitten on the same diet he is used to when you first bring him home. I was also new to savannahs, even totaly new to owning a cat. Since 8 months i've got two savannahs.

Good that you do so much research. But i wonder, are youre two cats playfull or do they sleep a lot?
Savannahs have lots and lots of energy. And i read more stories of people who owned other breed cats and took a savannah. The savannah wanted to play all day and the other older cats became anoyed by that. I don't want to scare you, because savannahs are awesome and so special. But they are way different than other cats. They have such a high level of energy. I think it will help you have two other cats so the savannah can divide his attention between the two. And if you play a lot and drain his energy a bit everyday maybe it isn't a problem.

Do you work? or ar you at home a lot? I think that also will be different.

Do you allready have pictures?

When waiting for our Amani to come home as first to be Savannah owner I had such great advises in this lovely place.

We only have 1 Savannah so I wouldn't be able to say much about introducing your cats and guiding them to live well together.

Amani gets dry kitten food from Royal Canin. Our vet strongly advised to give a balanced, quality kitten diet, unless we would be willing to prepare his raw food daily exactly measured and cooked for his age and weight, which is quite an undertaking. If we would not do this, he would risk missing any needed nutrients. Adding some chicken to his meal would definitely not cut it.

So if you want to feed raw, you would have to read into the subject quite thoroughly. There are quite some people here to advise you on the subject as well.

Thanks for the advice and warm welcome everyone! I'll definitely have to use the screen door idea. It sounds like that could help the introduction process.

As for the inquiry about my cats activeness, my older cat is mentally active but has asthma and arthritis so he often is forced to stop playing due to his ailments. My younger cat is very mild mannered but loves a game of chase around the house. There are 3 people in the house, and two of us work from home partially. We plan to alter our schedules so that the kitten will get as much attention as possible. The idea is to always have someone home for the first couple of months.

I will be asking the breeder for advice on the raw diet. I'm sure I can have them put some material together for me. :)
