Question for Breeders?

That kind of explains why breeders that I have looked at so far are named as the 'Mothers Name" and a number... Kind helps to depersonalize the kitten... Sounds cold to the kitten however...
Yes, that is what I do and it works very nicely for me. When I first started out I DID name all of my kittens...and it caused issues with my buyers, who preferred to name their own kitten and often did not like the names that I chose...so I stopped doing it. In one case, the buyer DID purchase the kitten and then complained to me for the next two years that the kitten would not respond to the name that SHE wanted to call it and would only respond to the name I had given it. Working with the public and live animals certainly has it's set of challenges! Once in a while I do break down and name them, but in all honesty, it does not mean anything, save for confusing the poor kitten, because the forever owner will rename it upon arrival anyhow.

My plan is once I decide on a kitten, I will give her name at that time... That way the breeder can use that name instead. Hopefully help the kitten out from Day 1.

That is always helpful and appreciated...but doesn't happen in every case.

I always tell the buyer that they can change the name, and I have never had them say later that the kitten would only respond to the name I'd given. Of course if they'd tried calling the kitten a name that was not so recognizable (the name needs to be simple else they don't respond) or if they use it all the time so that the kitten just ignores their voice... but many of my kittens are renamed by their owners without issue.

We adopt out rescues all the time and suggest to them to change the name, new life - new name... and of course the ones found on the street almost always have to have a name change as they can't tell us their name :-(

Most cats you can call 'cat' and have chicken in hand and they will come to that name- a name is a name... For me- I don't think calling Ella Blue 'blue kitten' will make her less of an individual (FOR ME)- so might as well call her something cute until she goes home OR she is chosen and a new name is given to me to work with her with.

On occasion, an owner gets so used to the name the kitten is called that it turns into the kitten's name- like Rocco and Jenny and Jack. LOL. But not always!

For me, I had always given kittens cute names. Then I thought it would be easier on me when they left (less tears, lol), if I called them something descriptively generic and easily changed by the new owners. So the first time I tried that with my next litter: Gold Boy, Big Ears, Dark Spots, Tiny Girl, and Gold Girl...guess what. Gold Girl is the one I fell hard for and kept...she is called G.G. or Geege now....and I went back to naming kittens "real names" :) I can only think of a handful that kept their original name after they left. When a new owner renames a kitten, I start calling them by that name, and in the case of "Bob"...formerly Axel....I played videos of his new mom so he would recognize her voice when he went home with her...I think it helped as he settled in very quickly :).
