Questions for those with outside enclosures

I have a couple of friends here in Az who have lost small dogs to coyotes. They are crafty little vermin.

I was more thinking that maybe those enclosures need an extra band of smaller mesh along the bottom perimeter to prevent this kind of thing? Our backyard is a tiny city one so it has solid wood planks with wood lattice at the top and welded wire mesh over the roof of it. If it were welded wire one the sides I think I would have wanted about a yard up to be smaller mesh to prevent other cats being able to approach my cats anyway?

I don't think mesh around the bottom would stop coyotes. If the enclosure has any vertical spaces (shelves, cat trees, etc.) then both coyotes and cats can reach higher to get what they want.
