WOW...the stories some folks tell really astound me. I am happy to know that you have given this little wonder a great home Tom, but must say that a Savannah x Bobcat mix is nothing I have ever heard of prior to this. To the best of my knowledge, there is some folklore regarding the Pixie Bob breed regarding having Bobcat blood in the pedigree, but there isn't an ounce of truth to it.
If, in fact, your kitten has any Savannah blood in his heritage, there is no reason why he should not have been registered with TICA...which leads me to believe that may be yet another tall tale someone is telling to get a kitten placed in a good home.
Lastly, there is absolutely NO TRUTH to the story he told you about destroying the runts! Responsible breeders consider each new life a miracle and would NEVER elect to destroy a healthy kitten because of diminutive size.
I hope you are able to get more info to share with us on this curious situation!

I was informed that the breeder was reported to the SC fish & wildlife for investigation on cruelty to animals, due to him having a license to breed exotic animals! I am still trying to get more info on him & my kitten. How can you tell if there are any Savannah characteristics in the kitten?
He plays real well with my Sphynx cat, and loves catnip.

If you are asking if there is a test to determine if your kitten is part-Savannah, the answer is no... Serval DNA is that similar to domestic that we can't at this time look at the DNA and be able to distinguish any Serval genes. So it comes down to a matter of opinion based on looks... and opinions often differ so you likely will get a variety of opinions. So what to do? Decide for yourself what your adorable kitten is and that is it. It doesn't so much matter, he's not a breeding animal therefore papers and pedigrees aren't so important. Nobody can prove he's not part-Savannah but I'd probably not try to claim he's part bobcat simply because THAT can be disproved via DNA.
As to the story of destroying the runts, we had some old friends to dinner this week and they were reminiscing about their childhood where the family dog would regularly get pregnant and the father of the house would just drown the puppies... so that the dog got sneaky and would hide them away. It just horrified me, but some people have different levels of caring for their pets.... I grew up with parents that even in the 70s firmly believed in spay/neuter and every stray that wandered onto our property was altered. Unless pregnant (a lot got dumped it seemed because of this) then we had to wait to do that. So I think there might be breeders that do this, but they aren't what I consider a "good" breeder if they have so little respect for those tiny precious lives :-(
