Savannah Cat Eating Habits

Just be sure not to base too much of the diet on chicken necks as I'd think they are high in bone content... It's been postulated that some of Babbage's gastrointestinal issues was contributed to by the high bone content of the ground rabbit he ate. It didn't cause his issue in the beginning as he wasn't eating then, but it did make the constipation worse and contributed to him developing megacolon... interestingly, when I talked to the Halshan distributor she said many breeders mix whole ground rabbit with rabbit meat to get the balance better... but it made me think that if whole ground rabbit is too much bone what about the cat food mixes I've seen that are mainly chicken necks and backs?

I agree...I only give Zuri chicken necks as a snack...she has not had them in ages. And I was told the same thing about rabbits, but the reasoning was that the rabbit is a lean animal with larger bone to muscle density and that is why many add chicken meat (for the fat content and to lessen the bone concentration).

I've not heard of people adding chicken meat to ground rabbit before...but this lady sold both ground rabbit meat and ground whole rabbit and said many find a mix of those to work well. I have heard of people basing their cats' diet on chicken necks and backs...and to me that seems unbalanced. My cats tend to not like ground meat when there is a lot of fat in it... if I don't take off much of the fatty skin of chicken before I grind for example. They just don't want the fat...which may be why they almost to a cat prefer rabbit to chicken....

Now, I remember where i read about adding chicken...it was on catfoodinfo.com and in relationship to using whole carcass, not ground rabbit.
