I wouldn't use it. There is mixed reviews but the wood is very aromatic and some studies show it increases asthma and respiratory diseases in animals.

Whether or not the studies are statically significant, you're putting in a ton of work and are going to have a new little one. Just not worth the risk in my opinion.

As a side note, Keep the Pictures Coming! I'm super excited to see what the final results are.

And they do pounce as though they are a ton of bricks! Loki goes at my toes in bed and it feels as though a ton of bricks has hit me. They put all of their weight and momentum into such a small surface area, it's nuts.
Thanks for the feedback, Renee! I pretty much drew the same conclusion and started to try to source something better to use as posts. I really want a solid foundation and would like to leave some of the posts as bare wood as a different scratching option to sisal. In looking around, I tracked down some untreated pine fence posts. Being the knucklehead that I am, I then realized that what I bought were the pine fence posts, not cedar. Which also explains why my "cedar" posts didn't really smell like cedar. I know that pine oil and the phenols in pine are dangerous as well and have shown to cause respiratory problems in small animals when used as bedding and I read an interesting article on rabbits that showed elevated liver enzymes when using pine bedding also. That said, pretty much all dimensional lumber and plywood is pine. I'd never considered avoiding pine lumber as a construction material. I'm certain some of the cat tree manufacturers are using pine 2x4 and plywood for cat trees as i've torn a few of them apart(well, my bengal did). Interested to hear anyone's thoughts. Do those of you that have made cat shelves/trees/walks/etc avoid pine plywood? I really dont want to have to deal with trying to make sonotube strong/durable...

Pine oil is toxic to cats, but if the pine is not oozing sap, and you are covering it with sisal or carpeting, you should be fine. I'm sure you're right that most cat furniture has pine as the wood base.

Thanks Patti! My original plan was to leave some of the wood exposed as an optional scratching post in case sisal wasnt preferred. Now i'm all paranoid about cedar and pine so i've decided to change things up and I ordered a bunch of cardboard tubes to wrap in sisal and use those instead. I did wrap one of the pine posts in sisal and glued everything down. I'm fairly sure that the glue will seal the wood fairly well, and I think it would be fine, but now that it's in my head that the pine could also be an issue i'm just paranoid. Plus I figure the cardboard tubes will be straighter and easier to level anyway. I may still use the one pine post I wrapped as a horizontal scratching post. If nothing else, it was good practice for the whole wrapping rope process!

Here are a couple of pics of how the post turned out. I was pretty happy with it. I'll end up doing the cardboard tubes the same way.

Your plans look great! I used solid wood posts from Home Depot - you can see my rooms here: http://www.savannahcatchat.com/threads/so-you-want-to-build-a-cat-walk-part-1.820/#post-272

My entire house has a cat walk going all around it...my savannahs all prefer sisal - I bought the thick sisal from home depot and wrapped the poles...

What do you have in mind to cover the shelves? Will they go completely around the room?
Thanks for your input Paige, and thanks for linking to that other thread. In the cat room there will be shelves on all walls. I have a bit of a height constraint in some of the corners and over the windows. If I add shelves in those locations, I have to get within about 1ft of the ceiling. I was worried that might be a little restricting, but I read in your other thread that Taj doesn't seem to mind being that close to the ceiling. That being the case, I may move the higher window shelves in my design up to above the windows and add a shelf above the closet and door to get all the way around the room. I'm also playing around with the idea of adding a long beam (8ft or 12ft) that can be located in various places to bridge the room in different ways. I was thinking of putting some eye bolts on the ends and then doing the same on some of the shelves and structures around the room. That way I could move it around from time to time, make it horizontal, put it on a slant, connect different shelves, etc. to add some variety.

For now my plan is to carpet all of the shelves. My thoughts are to trim the shelves with a small moulding that will be ~1/2" higher than the shelf itself. Then I will cut carpet to fit, and the moulding should conceal the edge of the carpet as well as keep things in place. If necessary i'll add some velcro under the carpet to keep it in place better while still keeping it removable.

Once the cat room is done i'll start working on some of the other areas of the house. I don't think ill be able to get all the way around every room, but I have at least something planned for most of them.

Notice I have steps also, so not every inch of the walls are covered :)
