Yes, the ear temperature is not thought to be quite as accurate as the rectal temperature, but much easier to do in many cats!

So glad that he has bounced back with eating and his stools... he should start to gain much more now. We usually like to see one pound per month of life, but as you say he's been ill. I'd give him a month of good eating and good stools then see how his weight goes :)
