Scratch Pad

I took 1" x 6" board and wrapped in 1/2" diameter nylon rope. Holds up well and they prefer it over our furniture. A few screws attaches to the wall or simply set it on the ground.

I like it! How did you attach the sisal to the board so that it doesn't come off?

How would introducing another horizontal scratch pad (with catnip) change anything?

I don't think it would change anything, although he might love a proper scratch pad and focus most his attention on that. I think scratching like that is an instinct cats have, after all even declawed cats will do it! There's removal of the claw sheath but it's also a marking behavior.

I think they can be very individual in what they prefer too...some like carpet, some cardboard...some prefer vertical scratchers and some horizontal. We have a mix here to please all types

I put out an inexpensive, reversible scratch pad after spraying it with catnip. At first it was encouraging as he immediately began kneading it. After a minute, his strong chew/rip instinct took over and he now only tries to rip it apart with his teeth.
I took it away and brought it back after a few hours and he goes right at trying to rip it open like a fresh kill.

You should get a standing scratching pole they all love it ! And it is good for them (and our furniture too...)

Is it one of those soft flexible type pads? He may see that more as a "toy" then...
