Basically they are livestock breeders, while the breeders you would find on this forum are hobby breeders, the focus is quite different.

SE breeds to produce in quantity to make money (hence size and coloring to appeal to the mass market). Other smaller breeders are involved in developing a breed type that resembles the Serval and the choices made reflect that. So it depends on what you prefer, if you want bulk size and a more orangey golden coat... or you want the physical traits of a Serval that may be more subtle, a tall long lean body with tall ears and a lemon yellow coloring that is really really hard to replicate in a domestic cat.

I don't believe in the setup that SE has that they can know the kitten's personality anywhere near as well as a breeder that is raising the kittens in a room in their house. They simply cannot be spending the time with them that I do for example. And there's no way they can have the time to spend giving the "after sales service" a smaller breeder does, being able to hold hands and answer all the questions that arise when raising a Savannah from kitten to adult. The number of kittens they sell, they would not be able to attend to so many questions over time. So they will attend to serious issues that require taking back the cat or replacing due to death or defect, but they aren't going to be a source of support and advice. And I see why. While I can sit there a full evening messaging about a sick cat going through test results and explaining what might be going on (I did this two nights ago) and be on hand to support them through a specialist visit to hopefully get a diagnosis today. It's a very different service that you sign up for... but not everyone wants a more involved breeder and not everyone sees the benefit of that.

Loki is from SE. I have been very happy with him. He came home and was easily socialized with myself, my husband, and our Ragdoll.

I get what everyone is saying regarding small breeders vs. larger breeders regarding attention after sales. Really though, Holly has done a good job answering all of my questions. I usually don't have too many due to research and being ocd with things. Quick and professional to respond to requests, etc.

I would purchase another kitten from SE unless there was another breeder that would guarantee the new kitten would stop knocking over full glasses of liquid on our couch :) Not saying I would only purchase from SE, but it's nice to have a good experience with an expensive venture.

Loki has been wonderful and sweet. His markings are absolutely beautiful, his ears are adorable, and he is a very gentle crazy boy.

Once again thanks for the info. This forum very helpful. I'm booked on a flight to Chicago tomorrow morning to "interview" some kittens from Select Exotics. I have seen hundreds of pictures of Savannahs since I began this quest in January. However seeing the kitten in person will reveal a lot more I'm sure. That being said, what should I be looking for tomorrow as far as physical traits and of course personality?

Thanks again.

Best of luck on your trip! I remember the first time I was there to get our first savannah, filled with excitement, a budget and dreams of narrowing down my selection. After getting a brief walk through of the facility, I sat down in the kitten meeting room and waited to visit kittens. When the kittens arrived, 5 of them I believe, one charged towards me and that was it. Hours of research, pictures and the budget out the window.

I will say at times they will release kittens early. There's a whole host of issues with doing so, and given that you're going to spend the next 20 years with your new friend, I'd make sure they get at least 12 weeks of life's lessons from Mom. Even if it means a second trip, it will be well worth it and take every last ounce of self control you have.

If I find my kitten tomorrow I'll most likely not take her home regardless. I'll just put down the deposit. I need to prepare the house. I'll fly back to get her when all is ready.

In terms of personality, it's always best if the kitten wants to be around humans and is handleable. So saying that, some kittens do need five-ten minutes to settle to wish to be curious about the new humans. Sit on the floor and wait.. There are times in a kitten's development when psychologically they are more wary of new things...

Physical traits is a harder thing, as you are looking for a pet then it really is a personal preference. For a pet it doesn't matter if the spots are tending to fade in the center to a rosette, it doesn't matter if the ears are of a size that the kitten will "grow into them" (all kittens have proportionally larger ears, in Bengals they expect the head to grow into the ears). You might go for size or you might distinguish a need for long lanky legs rather than a bulky body. It depends on how much a Serval appearance is important versus a dramatic and attractive appearance (the Serval is a much more specific subset of that). If you want "type" then read the Savannah breed standard and pull out the important traits. Ask to see the parents as both parents will have input into how that kitten ends up.

But when shopping for a pet, it comes down to a certain tug you feel towards an individual. There will be something about one kitten that may not be describable. Good luck!

Update :
Flew to Illinois to see the Savannahs. I loved them all. Really. The facility was impressive. Clean, well organized with happy, healthy looking cats. Flew back again this weekend and came home with a beautiful kitten. I'm sure I'll have plenty of questions to ask everyone and of course the first decision is a name. Top contenders are: Roxy and Rouge.

... on one condition......PICTURES please?! :)
OMG! That's extortion!
We like pictures. A lot. A real lot. Ok, we are picture freaks. ( and you won't believe the swooning for belly spots around here!)
But I will give an opinion without pictures.
Let the kitten earn it's name.
Signed, Rascal and Mayhem.:ROFLMAO:

Totally agree that they do a good job of earning their name. My wife and I have gone on for weeks with a new nameless kitten making sure we had just the right one.
