I think a male is your best bet. DSH is fine as long as it is one with high energy that can keep up . A lower gen male Sav would be good too if the budget allows. Either way make sure you do a proper quarantined if you bring any new cat in.

SENTRY Stop That! For Cats

I'm not so sure that a male would be best, but I don't know your household. A female may work out better because Theo may likely want to be the alpha. For a while, the kitten will be fine and likely yield to Theo, but as they grow, they become more confident and may want to be more alpha...It is difficult to say...
LOL-that is a tough call. My girls are definitely more dominant than my boys. Guess it just depends on the individual cats.

Thanks for the advice! It's hard for me to tell if Theo or Shady would tend to be the dominant cat, as they are so different in age, size, activity level, etc.

I thank goodness every day that Leo and Smooch have each other, I don't think I could keep up with either one of them! While they would much rather have me play with them, when I can't they wear each other out. Or they tag team and get into things maybe only one wouldn't, lol. Double the love, double the snuggles, double the trouble.
When one isn't into running around the one that is can get very clingy with me and need lots of attention. Either snuggles or me running after them saying "NO, put that down/leave that alone/get off the lamp/door/picture frame/garbage pail...". So even with the two of them we still have our moments.

I'm curious to know, who is dominant? Does the fact that Smooch is bigger than Leo make any difference?

Leo is 2 weeks younger than Smooch. Smooch has always been more confident and aggressive when playing in general but would and still does switch to submissive I think to boost Leo's confidence. If there is a noise Smooch runs to investigate, Leo hides.
She completely mothers him. She pins him down for a bath, scolds him when he gets too wild, and wraps herself around him to sleep. If I yell at Leo (usually to try and avoid some impending disaster) she yells at me. I watch her in different situations try to encourage him when he is nervous or unsure and find it amazing.
When there is an toy that I am playing with them that they are both insane over most of the time Smooch will allow him to have it. He growls and hisses at her and she very calmly backs off a few feet and lays down. When I say "Smooch's turn!" she jumps right in and grabs it. Leo is always shocked as he was sure his growling worked, lol. Smooch plays for a bit but she is always aware of Leo and what he is doing. Eventually she brings it back over and drops the toy next to him and then he is the king of his world again.
Very interesting to watch the dynamics of their relationship.
