If your cat has had soft stools for two years then the chance of having developed IBD is probably high. There's a lot of information on the internet about this issue and I think as Patti says flagyl and steroids can help as well as diet change depending on what he is being fed now (and was fed in the past).
Also understand that if he's not been feeling great all along, that will affect his personality and his interaction with others. I know that when I am feeling crappy I don't want to socialize either!
