Sterilite Clears for Litter Boxes?

Interesting Patti, I've been using 2-40lb bags of scoopable, drawing a line where the one bag level is and then adding a second bag as needed. Never thought about the cats tipping them over, but I've seen them do crazier things.

That's a lot of litter. I change mine out every week so don't use nearly as much.

It's not really that much as I never need to dump it, just scoop out the urine balls and the chestnut colored gems. When it's down to my fill line I just add a full bag. Again, I never need to do a wholesale litter change which has cut my litter expense in half plus made the litter boxes much more tidy.

Your method works, John, unless you ever have an issue with a fecal pathogen... changing the litter completely every week means that you remove contamination. It's one of the ways that Coronavirus for example can be really harbored in higher levels in a cattery or multicat situation ... I can see how it may work in a small pet household UNLESS one of the cats gets a gastrointestinal infection...

Being a microbiologist, I change all the litterboxes every week, the boxes are bleached in between changes, and even the litter scoops and their holders are bleached.

Thanks Brigitte! If I were in a larger multi-cat household or had the stand up pee'r I would be more concerned. When I did have the stand up corner pee'r, twice or three times daily I removed the side of the box stuck urine balls and wiped the spot down with a bleach solution and change out the litter with some regularity.

Simply just not providing an environment where these pathogen can propagate or survive very well with a single cat. If the pathogens are surviving in our litter box, I have an equally big issue with bedding and carpeting.

Not really, it is in the litterbox that most of the fecal pathogens are deposited...and not all is in the big lumps of feces. But with a single cat then they are only able to reinfect themselves...
