Territorial Pooping?

There are lots of brands of it. I sprayed all around my new couch when it arrived, and they haven't even tried to claw it.

Okay so the tinfoil did the trick of making him avoid the doorway. His pooping has slowed down by far.. like a day or two in between instead of daily. He used the box 3x this past week, and the consistency still is firm so no sickness. I went out for a few hours this morning.. and came home to POOP ON THE BED..

Both litter boxes were empty and clean.. what the heck is the problem here!!! Sigh.. I feel like he is reverting to his naughty 4 month old kitten accidents, I am afraid of having to confine him to the bathroom when I go out, or cover everything in tinfoil as a last resort... I am getting sick and tired of cleaning up poop!

Why would this change so suddenly? He is almost 1yr old and has been perfect on using the litter box the past 7 months. Maybe I should take him to the vet just in case to check out his poop or for other illness even though his behavior is fine?

I feel like I am being punished and I have no clue why he suddenly doesn't like his litter box anymore. He has never even used the second one I put out for him either by the way.. I guess I will bust out more tinfoil for the time being.

I think a vet trip might be in order here, Breanna, just to rule out anything that might be going on. You might also have to confine him to a crate (or your bathroom) for a while to reinforce the litter box habits.

Did you change his litter recently..or the box? Moved furniture around, a new significant other...any change no matter how slight in the household? Have you tried Cat Attract in with the litter?

Also...is it possible there is another animal coming around outside the front door? Keljin may be trying to mark his territory if he smells a strange cat, dog or other critter he can smell but can't see....

I'd also offer him another litter box next to the one he currently uses, of a different size, shape, height, etc. I have several different litter boxes in use here (don't ask how many, lol). The clear favorite is the big underbed type clear storage Sterilite ones. He may want one for each "duty", as a lot of my cats do. And don't forget to try the Cat Attract!

Does he have good poops? (Like toosie rolls) Does his poop have a funky smell? Cats can do things when they are trying to tell you some thing.

As Pam said he could be smelling something. Or something is different. I would make sure to really clean the area with a carpet deep cleaner.

Breanna, did you ever discover what worked? One of my 4.5 month old kittens went through a bought of diarrhea last week. While that seems to have resolved with a change of food and some help from the vet, he's now popped twice outside of his box, both times in the same bathroom as his litter box he's always used just fine. I have a pheromone diffuser in there, and the box is cleaned twice a day. I've used anti-icky poo to clean really well where his accidents were. I've also picked up the bathroom rug (the site of two of his accidents when sick, and one of his post-illness spots). I came home last night to poop behind the toilet. I'd love to know if you found the magic thing that helped in your case.

Amanda, it could be that he's now associating his diarrhea and feeling ill with that litterbox. You could try a different location, different litter type etc to try to help him get over it. And yes, remove the bathroom rug for the moment, or hang it up somewhere when you aren't wanting to stand on it...
