The F1-F3 Myth

Before I got my F1 male, I did do quite a bit of research here, searching old posts, etc. It was helpful for me.

In general, it was said over and over again here, F1's are just more of everything. I'd say that is very accurate and in a good way for my likings at least. My F1 is just more in need of my attention, that's really it! He actually waits for me at the door when I come home and as I pick him up he begins purring ravenously (behavior like a dog really). He does not destroy my home. To date, zero dollars of damage. He is not difficult, ferocious or wild just to dispel any myths. He is though a show off, purring attention thing, and ok, does make some funny noises :). Finally, yes he does expect my F2 male to clean him everyday like royalty (and yes, my F2 male does! ;) ). Good thing he doesn't expect me to do the same (LoL!). dj

My F2 baby removed my T key from my laptop :( Very destructive little bugger!

My F3 boy got the question mark off my current keyboard and the previous one he broke dragging it up and down the stairs. Fortunately that won't happen again as I now have it velcro'd to the desk.

I will say- human kids are much more destructive! My 7 year old as a toddler ripped ALL of the keys off his dad's laptop. You would think we'd have learned by now!

My wife and I did our research somewhat autonomously, and she was pretty well set on an f4 or later whereas I was looking at an F2 or F3. For both of us, tales of litter box behavior amongst early generations were what was scaring us off an F1, and having lived through that nightmare before we wanted no part of it.

Supposed energy levels were playing into exactly what we were looking for in a kitten, and when we pulled the trigger on an F3 he was pretty clearly more energetic than the F2s who were a week or two older. He was also more engaged in human interaction than the other kittens, even moreso than later generations.

Obviously there were a broad range of things that weren't quite living up to the stereotypical examples we had read about. Although I believe there is some level of truth to the claims, there is also such a broad range of what a kitten will become it's not at all very useful. Generally the remarks on breeders sites are very thoroughly qualified that the kitten you get and the cat you end up with are covered.
I so agree John, that the information is not that useful. The best thing is to go and meet the kitten you are interested in, before you buy. I find that individuals vary SO much, that in my experience, the gen seems not to matter that much.

Yes, Jacq, but sometimes you can't meet the kitten. If you live in California and want an F1, you can't really do that. It does help to get referals from other buyers and YES, you can ask, and a kitten from repeat litter. That way you get a good idea about looks and temperament. With my F1, I got to see her two older siblings which pretty much solidified it for me. Again, if the parents of the kitten are fractious and untouchable, unless they have some unfortunate history, you may not want one of those babies!
