The Vet

I live within a 2 minute drive of my vet so I had an easy time desensitizing my SVs. With each one, I'd take them to the vet for social visits where everyone fussed over them, the cats got used to the smells and noises and then we'd go home. I did this about 2x a week for a month. When it came time for shots & neutering, we had no problems. I still take them for social visits to ensure that the 2 large, strong cats are easy to handle should an emergency health situation arise.

Good luck finding a vet with a better attitude than your current vet.

I did the same thing Deborah...

I agree with the advice to find a new vet. One that tries to talk people into declaw just horrifies me. See if your town or city has any awards that are voted on by consumers... here in SF we have two local free papers that give out yearly awards voted on by readers. I've never voted in this but my vet hospital regularly gets those awards...so thinking it might be a good resource. Trish's advice of asking on Craigslist was a good one, although not sure how many crackpot replies you might get.

I do think looking for a good cat vet is what is needed, not a Savannah-specific vet. Jengo is later-generation right? If he was an F1 then mentioning that might be really important, but at that generation he is no different from any other high energy cat breed. You are right, no ketamine for the neuter! Good luck!

I agree that you need to find a different vet. I'll ask around and see if anyone knows a good one in your area.

Cats never like the vet, but you could get him accustomed to the carrier by leaving it out and giving him treats in it, that way he does not associate the carrier with something negative (going to the vet).
