This Has Me Baffled

Mine get raw supplemented by canned chicken cat food. When they get their canned, I can tell immediately. Poopourri is in order! With raw, there is nothing.

I'll backup the raw... I have to walk over and look to see if there's a :poop: in the box. I use horse bedding from the Tractor Supply Store, just the generic TSS brand and it works wonders. But again.. with raw diets there's not much of any smell to cover up.

For watering we us a ceramic Drinkwell (Avalon) fountain and I see Leto drinking often from it. Easy to tend, I refill it a couple times a week to make sure it stays fresh then on Sunday's wipe the whole thing down with vinegar to clear off any trace of algae or what not.

Well, you can buy a fountain from our sponsor, Glacier Point...best fountain as far as I am concerned and I have had them all...everyone here who has purchased one, loves it.

I'll second the Glacier Point fountain. Two of my cats love it and are drinking more than they used to. I can tell by the litter box needing to be changed more often. The third cat, Hobbes still prefers water from the faucet. Yep, he has me well trained.:(

Currently I do my own recipe for a raw diet and still feed very minimal amounts of canned and kibble.

As for better brands of cat foods, it's really a revolving door. Someone produces good food for pets, grows in popularity then before you know it they are bought up by a big conglomerate and the quality subsides.

The frozen raw food I see at the pet store doesn't look anywhere near the raw I feed our cats and for example raw chicken food available is comprised of a bunch of chicken backs and organs. I'm sure it's better than canned or kibble but I don't want our cats getting backed up and expelling ghost poops which look like some sort of calcified artifact.

Before you jump in with both feet I would suggest trial flighting some raw muscle meat from chicken. if that goes well then you have an easy path.

Oh, and thanks for that second article Deborah, good stuff!

I agree with this. Primal, while technically "raw," uses high pressure pasteurization in about half their foods. I read somewhere that the only ones not HPP are beef, rabbit, & venison; coincidentally those are the only Primal varieties my cats will eat these days.

Edit: here's the list, it's the poultry that is HPP. http://www.primalpetfoods.com/education/foodsafety

RadCat is extremely expensive but more closely resembles what John might get out of his grinder.

I've been feeding a verity of 'Blue Ridge Beef' grinds with bone. Chicken, Kitten Mix (includes beef heart and liver and chicken bone). Anyway, if they have a close vendor the cost I get here is pretty reasonable, around $2.00 lbs. (slightly under).

I recently ordered some Mazuri for whole pray that does not include extra calcium. His poops have a bit of white in them so I figure he's getting enough. But this little bit of supplement hopefully completes the needs with the chicken and other mixes that don't have organs included.

I tried "WildTrax" supplement but he'd turn his nose up to anything I put that one. Leto just dislikes anything with veggie in it! LOL

Fed him some frozen raw tilapia, which I cubed, yesterday. He ate it all.
Any more suggestions on water fountains?
I can't imagine that the running water will prevent him from fouling the water with his mitts, toys, food, etc.

Louie is not a picky eater. I assume that supplements, especially taurine might be required, although, in the wild is it still needed?

Bottom line: can I feed a raw diet without supplements?

How do I feed a raw diet? In the wild, the cats eat rancid meat. Why are so mony people so fastidious about removing raw meat before it "spoils"?

I welcome changing over to raw food, although I don't want to complicate the issue to the point that it's a obsession and a nightmare.

I can go out and buy a food processor, then go to the supermarket and buy a week's supply of cheap turkey parts for $2.00 a pound, grind up the lot and put in a sealed container in the fridge. Give him some each day and replenish the following week.
