Trying to figure out right cat for me

Jessica

Savannah Kitten
I should have thought about that one. My 80lb female dog dominates my 110lb male. I think my female bengal would hold her own though.

I guess part of me is worried this could be cycle that could repeat from what Amanda said and reading about savannahs. Get new kitten to entertain adult cat. Kitten exhausts adult. Need kitten #2 to entertain kitten #1. I am ok with 3 cats, but I know 2-3 is my limit after having 4 for 9-10 years. I also think though that a kitten would help energize my house as I now have 2 adult/senior cats and 2 senior dogs. These questions can be so hard sometimes. I have not had a kitten or puppy in 10 years. I will need to keep a eye on my female for the next couple weeks to see how she acts.

Often the problem with getting a Savannah kitten and finding it too much for the existing adult cats is because the existing cats were not high energy breeds to start with. A Bengal cat is a high energy cat so I would think that it will be sufficient for a Savannah kitten...but I also strongly believe you need to consider the personalities of ALL the pet residents and how they might tolerate being pestered for play 24/7. Just because your Bengal might be happy to play with a new kitten may not also mean the other cat does too...

One thing I have noticed over and over in my years on the Savannah pet email lists and doing Savannah Rescue for years... people often find for the first year everything is fine with their Savannah kitten, the other cats will cut a kitten a break and tolerate the play and wrestling and chasing more. But when the kitten turns into adult and STILL wants to chase and wrestle all the time, they get irritated and things become more difficult. It happened to me in the beginning, we had two older DSHs when we got our first Savannah (an F2)... and for the first year it was fine, he played mostly with the beagle puppy we got at the same time. But in the next couple years after that first year things got more difficult. Eventually two or our close friends took the two domestics home with them, where they were blissfully happy away from the mayhem. It made me very cautious when a little over 4 years ago we added a domestic cat breed to the household, but I chose my British Shorthair for their tolerance and strength of character, it's water off a duck's back to Georgie, he just ignores them if he doesn't wish to play...and that is perfect!
