Most of the time my vet has been able to express a sample when I have had the cat there...
But you can try using something like the Breeze System pellets in a normal litterbox, they don't absorb hence then you can collect the sample from there. You would confine the cat to a room with only that litterbox as option... I think I have heard of using aquarium pebble stuff similarly...
