Vacations with Savannah?

Sorte
I'm about to try my luck leaving Sorte unattended for a night (Saturday from 4PM-Sunday around 1PM). We shall see if our house is destroyed when we get back. I plan on clearing EVERYTHING out in the rooms he will have access too that he could cause havoc on as well as unplugging all electrical wires. He will have dry food in 2 rooms and water in 3 different areas along with 3 separate litter boxes as he only likes to go once in each one until I clean it out. LOL! He has done fine by himself during the day while we aren't here, mostly sleeping, so I'm sure he will be OK. :)

We have a Beach house and Honestly didn't know how the cat would do but He needed meds when we first adopted him so didn't want to leave him home. So we packed Him, the Great Dane and The Mini Pin and off we went. He seems to love travel and doesn't care what house he's in as long as he has us a litterbox and the dog pals. So we got lucky.=) Don't think he would do well in a kennel due to his Hating the Humane society Venue we adopted him from.

I hope our kittens get accustomed to traveling. We would love to take them places like the beach you mentioned!

How did Sorte do on his own Paul??

We had decided to not travel for the first year and a half of having our kittens unless it's a serious emergency. When the time comes to leave them for a night we're going to have family babysit and see how they fare!

I have hardly traveled at all since I have had Taj and Zuri...mainly to cat shows and not at all for the last 6 months or so...if you start them early in the car, they will do better for the most part, has been my experience.

I totally forgot to update this! LOL! Sorte did very well alone by himself for the night! We tired our best to know that he would be OK, but waves of worry kept coming throughout the night. The only things that we found were that he had jumped on the stove an accidentally knocked off the spoon holder, he took out the string from Sarah's robe to play with and he knocked/pulled the FM antenna out of the radio (which we had on for him). All of this was absolutely nothing in comparison to what our minds came up with that he could do. LOL! He had drank plenty of water, eaten most of his food and used his litter boxes just fine. Boy was he every happy to see us when we came in the door though! ;)

All in all, we were very happy to see how well he did. He is such a good boy!

I'm not planning to travel anytime soon after getting our kittens (maybe when they're around 2 years old or more) but I've been wondering what other Savannah cat owners do when you go on a trip or vacation away from home. Say it's for 3-5 days...

Do you leave them at home with a house sitter who will feed them and play with them twice a day?

Do you leave them home to play amongst themselves? I've been told you can just leave enough food and leave them for a weekend but 3-5 seems like a lot.

Take them with you? I see a lot of pet friendly hotels but say if you were going to visit the Grand Canyon from the East Coast, you can't really leave them alone in the hotel room (potential damages) and not sure if they would enjoy a long road trip or flight. Assuming you wouldn't be able to actually eat in most restaurants during the trip and possibly not be allowed into a lot of the sights you went to see as no pets allowed.

Or... Never go on a trip and stay home with your Savannahs?

What do you do?
Hello,

I have some first hand experience with going away a few days while being a fur mother of four. My 2 sphynx are alright when I am gone, it's the big brothers (F2 SV Boujié) and Richard Parker (F3 Bengal) that I must worry about.

Before leaving I unplug everything in the house that can be chewed on with the exception of the auto feeder and fountain water bowl.

I have found that putting all the valuables (yes, this is why we can't have nice things! Lol) in my bedroom such as plants, lamps, and anything that I would like to be in tact when I arrive home and close the door.

I personally do not feel comfortable leaving them for 3-5 days without hiring a pet sitter or having a family member stay.

SV's, especially early generations will get bored with no stimulus for days and in turn look to other things to play with! Which could be anything from your grandmother's urn on the mantle to knocking things off shelves and tables.

I typically have a trusted family member (that I know will put at least 2 hours of good play in daily) and open my doors to them for a stay under the condition the care for the cats.

Boujié will act out if he does not get play time and it an be disastrous! :)

Hope this helps!
