Advice needed about my Savannah purchase!

Thanks for the support Love 2 I know it's hard for some people to understand how attached you can get to the little guys in such a short amount of time, but others who have Savannah's definitely understand how special they are. I just keep reminding myself how lucky I was to have the time with him I did and am just glad it went quickly so he didn't have to be sick or suffer for very long. It's definitely reassuring knowing others have gotten healthy kittens from SE. I hope that will also be the case with my next boy.

The kitten is from a different breeding pair, but I'm not sure if the 1st generation (grandparents) are related... I'm hoping the odds are in my favor. I don't have any other cats or other pets and it has been about 5 months since I lost my furbaby and I have cleaned/sterilized everything & tossed some of the toys... although it's my understanding the virus, if it was shed, wouldn't have survived longer than a month and I still have another month to go before the kitten is old enough to leave SE.
Holly should be able to furnish you with pedigrees, both of the kitten you lost and the new kitten you have chosen... so that you can compare their relatedness :)

The pedigrees would be nice info to have... although, I don't know if she'd let me change my mind since I already picked a kitten. I would be taking him to the vet for a check up shortly after I get him and was thinking about seeing if there were any tests I could have done. What I found online is that there isn't really a way to test for FIP, but I could have him tested to see if he has been exposed to the coronavirus.... but even then, I wouldn't know if the strain of the virus was one that could cause FIP and coming from a cattery there's a very good chance he would test positive for having antibodies so I'm not sure if that would really help either :not sure:

Well... at least if you could compare pedigrees and find out one way or the other, there's a chance you might worry less when you find out that any relationship is fairly distant. Which is very possible with the large program that they have there!

As you have already learned from reading online, you can test for exposure to coronavirus but probably 80% of all cats have been exposed and only a tiny proportion of those develop FIP... hence it's not that useful a test.

Here's my cynical viewpoint, which is actually a positive one for this case... Select Exotics is a huge BUSINESS, and it is not good business to have kittens die. Hence they don't keep breeding lines that have kittens that die early. They would retire cats and select healthier cats. They don't depend on that queen or that sire for their program hence they can do that easier than maybe another breeder might. At least, that would be my theory on this...

I definitely agree with your viewpoint... which is why I opted to get another kitten from SE instead of a refund. That and I was very happy with how well my 1st boy was socialized as well as very loving/affectionate. I do think I will ask Holly about the pedigrees. It can't hurt to ask and it would give me a little peace of mind.

I have 2 boys from S.E. I would feel comfortable buying from Holly again for sure. I am not familiar with the disease your little kitten past from, but I do agree that because Holly's business is so big, compared to others, it would not be in her best interest to disappoint. I am so sorry for your loss. I hope you get a wonderful new baby and share many years together.

Sorry-- FIP is also thought to be triggered by stress and overcrowding.

I've heard of too many FIP kittens from very very large catteries to think it's just bloodlines involved.
