All About Angus!

Thanks Mrs. CC! We have our first vet check up today, so I'm definitely going to be asking them for their opinion. I did a little more research and found it could effect his peripheral vision and balance. Which would make a lot of sense, because I find him to be very jumpy when you come up next to him or toss a toy from the side, and he seems very clumsy for a cat. I had been attributing the clumsiness to him being only 12 weeks old, and that might be all it is, but I think it could also be his vision. I appreciate your suggestion!

Good morning everyone! Angus is doing great adapting to our home. He has not ruined one thing! yet! haha We've used a spray bottle with 4 parts water, 1 part vinegar, to keep him out of things he shouldn't be in- like the fireplace and under a recliner- and he's learning very quickly not to do those things again! He's a ball of energy when we get home from work though, so we played with him and ran him ragged for about 4 hours til bedtime! He was pooped!!

So I have a question. It seems he is a bit cross eyed. This doesn't bother me too much because I know its only a cosmetic thing and it isn't effecting his vision. My boyfriend is kind of irked about it because we did pay such a large sum for this kitten we expected to be what we were told he would be. The biggest issue is, in some of the pictures our breeder sent us, we thought they looked a little crossed, so I asked the breeder about it. She told me it was just him focusing on the camera & was nothing to worry about. I feel mostly upset that she wasn't straight forward with us about it. And maybe because she was with him all the time she didn't notice? I don't know. But what I was really wondering if his eyes may straighten out as he gets older? Is there anything non-invasive we could do to help fix it? I 100% know all this does is add to his character, but it really does take away from the look of the cat we thought we were getting. Please don't flame me for it! I love him and won't love him any less if he is like this forever, just wanting advice on if there is anything we can do to fix it. Thanks everyone!!

It would probably be best to discuss with your breeder...Angus is a gorgeous boy and I'm sure you love him regardless, but...as you said, this is something that was not disclosed, so you have a right to ask questions...

Yeah the more I think about it, the more ticked i am over the fact she basically lied to me about it. My bf is pretty pissed. I'm keeping my fingers crossed the vet has an answer for us.*sigh*

Good luck with everything. Hopefully the breeder will do what is right for the cat and you, the customer.

My F3 snow boy, Chuju is cross eyed, and he is the most athletic of all my boys, and can jump to the ceiling, and up on high furniture with no issues. He is far from clumsy, and his eyes have never affected him in any way.

It did seem from the pics I had seen earlier of Angus that he was cross-eyed but I had assumed the breeder had disclosed that and you were okay with it... it seemed rude to say "wow is he cross-eyed?" as if it were necessarily a bad thing. Definitely the breeder should have had that checked out with her vet to say it was "nothing". And having your vet check him out would be good but I don't know that there is anything that can be done. It may straighten a little as he develops...I remember buying a kitten that appeared a little cross-eyed (not nearly as strongly as yours looks) and when at a cat show a judge looked at him and said he wasn't properly crossed and that there were "exercises" to help. Using a short wand toy, if you get him to follow it slowly side to side and up and down...don't move it fast but very slow and allow him to focus on it. It seems to train his eye muscles or something.

But as long as he can see some, he will do great. Cats are amazing. We've homed one SV via Rescue that is blind and with some modifications to his environment he's done amazingly. Your boy is obviously not close to that impaired so it may just be his peripheral vision is limited. Clumsiness is a common trait in our Savannah kittens... they tend to be a little careless and do fall or miss what seem to be easy jumps (usually right after managing a really hard jump too).

Some of my friends who I had shown pictures to throughout the waiting period made comments about him having crossed eyes. And I asked the breeder and her words were "his eyes are perfect." Had I know that this was what I was getting, I probably wouldn't be so frustrated over it. But I straight up asked her about it. I'll talk with my vet about eye exercises too. :/ ill also be contacting my breeder ASAP after the vet visit.

I guess the breeder may have meant that she didn't think his vision was at all affected...?

I don't know, do they ever seem to be straighter? Or are they always in that crossed position?

They seem to always be crossed. They don't look as bad when his pupils aren't dilated. But even then, they seem to slant inwards at the top. It doesn't seem like he has a focusing issue. He's really good at playing with toys and catching feather teasers in the air. I'll make sure to schedule him a full eye exam when I'm at the vet this evening.

Unfortunately apart from looking at the physical structures, there's not a lot that can be done. They can't read an eye chart for us, LOL! But yes, let us know what your vet says!

It's great that he seems to be able to play very effectively... means that it may just be more a cosmetic issue than anything else :)
