I got him at 6 weeks old. Breeder offered me fancy feast which I refused. I use premium food. loose stool on and off with occasional blood since he came to me. Vet started a Probiotic Thursday. Vet did not see blood on stool sample but I see it at the end of his elimination.
He is neutered

Thank you. it should still be kitten food, correct? What about those of us who work, can he be fed 3 times am pm & bedtime? I am going to try some boiled chicken tonight......how much to start?
Any of the canned food I would use is good for any life stages. But I guess if there is a kitten formula you should use that. And 3 times a day is good.

I would not recommend feeding boiled chicken for anything more than a treat since that will affect how much canned he eats and boiled chicken is not balanced enough on its own. It should be raw meat and it needs to be balanced with 80% muscle meat, 10% secreting organ (with at least half of that being liver) and 10% bone (or bone equivalent). And it must be dark meats that contain enough taurine because cats can't produce it on their own, they can only get it from their food.

The loose stools is most likely due to the sudden change in diet. Even when breeders start kittens off with a food that's not what we would choose, it's best to slowly transition the kitten to the new food to prevent digestion problems no matter how much we dislike the food they pick. A sudden change will almost always cause loose stools.

The probiotic can't hurt anything, but I don't think it's going to do much to stop the loose stool. I'd try adding some fiber or pumpkin to Neo's food. I personally use "Diggin Your Dog Firm Up Pumpkin" when Shango needs extra pumpkin. You mix it with water or in the wet food. Shango is super picky, but likes the taste of pumpkin as do most other cats.

I agree with SavannahLuv, except there is a probiotic that specifically helps with diarrhea. It is called S.Boulardii and you can order it online or get it in your drugstore under the name "Florastor". It is a human probiotic but I use it often on my cats if there are loose stools. It will help regardless of the cause. It helps with stress diarrhea, from parasites/infection (even in CDiff for humans). The stuff really works.

What kind of raw meats? I have a lot to learn.....do buy at grocery or pet store or online? I have read that a raw diet is not necessary???

They sell pumpkin at pet stores, but you can also get some from your local grocery store. Natural canned pumpkin, but it must be plain and un-sweet. NOT the kind you use for pie filling.

The dried pumpkin I use says to mix 1-2 teaspoons hydrated for 0-20 lb pets, 1-2 tablespoons for 20-50 lb pets and 2-5 tablespoons for 50-100 lb pets. I'd start with 1 teaspoon and if that doesn't help firm up the stool, try 2 teaspoons the next day.
