Do you even get modified live for /against rabies? That´s scary, and I know European countries do not allow it.
Apart from that, any animal should be healthy when it´s vaccinated. Otherwise you´re just adding to the immune burden (endangering the animal) and aiding disease development and at the same time not getting very much benefit from your vaccines. Multiple vaccines when boosting is not a known problem, but when giving the initial shots I would advocate a little care and not mix too many: usually the panleuko and calici and herpes are in the same shot, if you then add Clamydophila you´re straining it (which may be a reason for some of the reactions you see to Clamydophila vaccines), and adding rabies on top is just that: in my opinion going over the top. And you, the owner, have to give informed consent.

As for killed vs attenuated, I think Ive had my say on that...:cat:

Can you tell me why you like the killed vs. live? I read on one breeder's website that Savannahs should only be given killed, but then some people on here say there are negatives to killed.... I am extremely confused and stressed about what I should be asking for from our vet.

I am talking about killed rabies...we use modified live for everything else....

Kelly, I very glad you started this thread. So many people just don't know about these things and trust their vet's judgement without question. I used to be like that. Now I know better.

We live close to the Virginia Tech Veterinarian School. Those students are Savannah-like in their obsession with finding the best treatments, updated data, and newest techniques paired with modern technology. Since we also have sheep, they also deal with large animals, so it's a win-win for us. Must add that I love my local vet, too. I buy the vaccine and she administers it.

As Paige said, killed referred to rabies. The only rabies vaccine I know of that is half alive uses a poxvirus (I think it was, probably canary pox) to carry the rabies antigen, so the rabies virus is not live. An attenuated rabies virus is scary!
Otherwise, I personally don't like the idea of too much adjuvant, and attenuated (live) usually gives a better immune response. I use it for my SVs, and have not had any major issues: at worst one of the kittens had a slight limp for three days (I inject in the hind leg), possibly because some was given IM. That is the only visible reaction I've had, but when vaccinating kitties at a very young age because of environmental pressure I might consider killed for the first shot and live for follow-up.

So, my breeder contract recommends FRVCP and rabies at 16 weeks. Should I definitely get them separately? What about distemper?

One of the vets at my clinic graduated from there.
