Congratulations on the two new Savannahs! It's very hard to lose kitty companions, but hopefully Cayenne and the snow kitten will help ease that loss :)

Mother Nature most definitely did not cooperate... of course the next week we are back in to the 50s and 60s but I'm glad that they finally made it home safely and hope Kat and your daughter were able to enjoy their visit in Nashville! Cheyenne may take a couple of days, but get a feather wand going in front of her and that should take care of any reservations she has. LOL Snow girl was always more the cuddler and seemed a perfect match for you daughter. :) Post pics when you can!

Cayenne (like the pepper) was chilled out yesterday evening, and was playing with the wand, not sure of the other cat that looks just like her in the mirror. Figured out how to open the cabinet drawers where the food was, and played with the snow kitty. I think she is adjusting fine. I was surprised at no cat growls when I tried to pet her, after the trip she went to get to Texas, I would have growled if I was her.

Congratulations on your new babies David! I am assuming you do not actually live in Austin since last I heard Savannahs are still banned in Travis County?

No - north of Austin, not in Travis county.

Here is what our local breeder has stated:

The law is complicated by the ignorance of those who wrote it. As a result, it's pretty much unenforceable Servals are illegal, because of HB 1362 which bans "Dangerous Wild Animals". F1 Savannahs are essentially banned, because they are hybrids of Servals. BUT...according to the USDA a cross between a wild animal (the Serval) and a domestic animal (the cat) yields a domestic animal. You would only get a wild animal if you bred two wild animals together.
Next...the hybrid part...A hybrid is the result of a cross between two different taxa...or species. But an F1 bred to a domestic cat isn't the result of two separate species, so from F2 and later technically and genetically they aren't hybrids. And, this is important...there is absolutely no test...DNA or otherwise that can distinguish between a Savannah of any generation and a proven domestic cat.
So...short answer...you can get a Savannah, you can take it to a vet, and nothing will happen. If you are concerned about rabies, talk to your vet about getting a Rabies titer done. This is a test that proves that the animal has immunity to Rabies after it gets the shot.
And, that's the best answer there is.

I understand Jim's position, but the reality of the situation (as someone that has worked in Rescue for some years now) is that you may lose your cat while fighting to prove that the law is unenforceable. They can and will confiscate animals and then say sorry afterwards. It's just not worth the risk to the CAT to place in an illegal county, imho. It's always the cat that suffers :-(

I'm very glad to hear that you are not in Travis County. I have known Jim for years and it really doesn't matter if a law has been passed due to ignorance or if he thinks it is unenforceable, the bottom line is that it IS law, and people who chose to break the law are only putting their Savannahs at risk. I hope you are aware of the laws in your county - state law requires you to have a permit, a structure to house them, and insurance on the cat. Counties can only be more restrictive, not less restrictive of state law.
