Black nose genetics question

Not exactly, if recessive then one of the parents of the pink nosed cat does not have to have a black nose... we have a saying "recessives are forever", a recessive gene can hide for many generations and just pop out when another cat carrying that gene is introduced. This is the same for marbles, snows, blue...all things we can see pop out in our litters when no cats in the five generation pedigree exhibit that trait. And sometimes that is because a littermate might have had that trait, but our pedigrees don't show those cats...and if they were petted out and the BST one selected for a program that's all you'd see in the pedigree...and of course our pedigrees don't note black noses either!

I am just wondering..Pinked striped black noses are probably still classified as black noses? I know this characteristic is inherited from servals as many of them posses this type of coloration on their nose..Could it be like a different gene, Brigitte?

It's possible the pink-striped black noses are due to a locket gene....the white spotting factor we see in cats that gives you a white patch on the neck or groin or sometimes even white toes. There's no reason to expect that this can't occur in Servals either...

At the end of all this, we just don't know if all the Serval color genes are the same as domestic cat ones...

Oh yes, let me correct myself..Me dummy...If one of the cat's parents has black nose, then you can be 100% sure this cat carries for black even if she/he has a pink nose..And yes, "popping out" means 2 carrier cats met in the breeding. In this case it is 25% chance to have a black nosed kitten.

So according to Brigitte black nose must then be like blue eyes! That is why some pick nosed doesn't have to always carry for black nose (as brown eyed person whose any of the parent doesn't have blue eyes..). So if mother and father have pink noses and for example just one of them is a carrier for black you will never end up with black nosed kitten. You can easily find out if a pink nosed cat carries for black - just check if one of cat's parents has black nose..

A pink nosed cat that is a black nosed carrier won't necessarily have a black nosed parent - since it is recessive it may not actually show up for generations, until two carriers are bred to each other.

I believe the pink or brick colored stripe, star, or triangle is a version of the BST nose, which is brick (pink) surrounded by black.

We have a black-nosed F2 that was bred with a pink-nosed stud and had 3 F3 kittens, two of which have black noses and the third with a very dark nose that I suspect will have a shade of pink in the center of her nose.

I'm not quite sure what you're asking Angie but in order to produce black noses I believe a pink nosed cat has to carry for black, however there are pink nosed cats that do not carry for black.

That is exactly what I am asking. My male has a black nose my female has a pink nose, all her kittens have pink noses. Could she ever have a black nose kitten if she doesn't carry for black noses?

No, if she doesn't carry for it, I do not believe she can produce it. Her kittens might carry for it if the sire is black-nosed. But there is no current test for this trait, and theoretically not producing one yet does not mean she can't...

Hey, but don't get sad - there still is a chance..you see, if she IS a carrier, then there was 50% chance of black nosed kitten, not 100%..so those pinked nosed kittens could just be simply the other 50%, and they are carriers, of course..So these statistics/genetics are also about luck. Mother nature
