cat digestion issues have me questioning raw

The shipping costs from Hare-Today is so expensive that it is difficult to use them to try out food. If I was receiving a regular supply, it would be fine but the cost of shipping + throwing out all the meat that they do not eat is making me cringe. I did reach out to Carla - thanks for that! I also found an exotic meat seller about an hour away. That seems about the best way to try some different types of meat.

Talk to your local grocery store butcher! Our kroger used to only carry the regular chicken, beef, and pork but started carrying duck, bison, goat, lamb, and rabbit after an inquiry. It's more expensive then chicken but its a nice treat. I have no recommendations for transitioning to other foods because one cat has refused all attempts and has decided it's friskies or nothing. I also tried mixing in just a tiny bit of healthier food or to get him to eat raw but that boy is stubborn.

Rafiki had giardia when she was less than a year old. We treated her but since she shares everything including the litter box with Jammu, he got and then gave it back. Oddly enough, both were symptom free. We had decided to do a fecal when they got their 1 yr booster and that was how it was found. Getting rid of it the 2nd time was harder as Jammu would foam at the mouth from the meds.

I know that the source for the first time around was the water supply. Los Angeles is notorious for having elevated counts at times. Since then, I have only given them bottled water. Other than the water supply, how do cats get it?
There are lots a ways to get Giardia. Biggest way is threw other animals that have it. Baghira got it from our friends kitten that he never came in contact with . We didn´t know that the kitten had it at the time. When we visited them we must of some how brought it back with us in our house :(.

how do I get them to try the new food?
If I remember correctly, your cats like either freeze dried chicken or the Fresh is Best hearts yes? What I do to get mine to try something new and to rejuvenate their interest in a particular food is to grate the freeze dried heart onto the food. I use a grater with a fine grate but I'm sure a cheese grater would be fine too.

And you should probably start with just one or two chunks mixed in with their regular food and covered with the grated treat and adjust depending on how that goes.

Carla from rabbits4 you can likely help you. I don't really think transitioning from mom to raw is the issue, although my kittens get transitioned to canned for this very reason...they do eat raw as well, but I have them eating both...My cats eat many different foods and so do the kittens...Tempest is already trying chicks :) But she lives up to her name, so not surprised!

Applaws has a canned with pumpkin. have you tried it for the times when Rafiki won't eat? Or Jammu and Rafiki have issues? Maybe that would work for an interim feeding.

I do believe that Cinny is developing a chicken allergy, but she eats beef and rabbit chunks and stella and chewys as well...have you tried food elimination to see what they are allergic to? You may have to feed one cat one food and another a different food...that is how we roll here!

The problem in transitioning from mom milk to raw was simply that they both loved raw. I started them on Darwin and they only had chicken and turkey available at the time. Initially Jammu would get bored with his food so I would add a couple of spoonful of canned food but Rafiki hated that so eventually I was just feeding either chicken or turkey. Yes, my bad! I should have worked harder the first year to get them to like other things. I learned my lesson the hard way when Darwin changed their formula and neither cat would eat it. Rafiki developing liver fibrosis (and has apparently made a complete recovery, knock on wood) shortly thereafter made me concentrate solely on getting her to eat anything at all so I defaulted back to cooked chicken and then thankfully to the raw when the meds would allow it. Once they were healthy again, I started adding beef chunks to the food but never quite got to the point where they had a beef-only meal. When Jammu had a skin reaction a month ago, I eliminated the beef. So assuming that this current reaction is food related, it would have to be chicken since that is all that he has eaten (other than freeze dried duck tenders and hearts) this past month. That makes the food elimination unnecessary in regards to diagnosis but makes the path forward quite rocky!

Neither have had digestive issues in the past. Last month was the first time for even diarrhea. Jammu will occasionally throw up after eating grass and Rafiki will if she decides to eat all of Jammu's food as well as her own. Other than that, no issues. So this morning I added a smidgeon of pumpkin. Suffice to say that they were not pleased. Rafiki finally ate her food but it took quite a bit of kitty crack in chunks to accomplish. Picky little monsters! To anyone new to this site.....learn from me and my mistakes and introduce your babies to a wide variety of food as early as you can!

Chicken is a known allergen to cats...I honestly don't feed a lot of it...

And yes, it is why I introduce my kittens to all different foods - to make the transition easier :)

Try unflavored psyllium if you can't get the cats to eat the pumpkin, it works great to help bulk up the stool.

Yesterday she did not eat at all. This morning she ate at least 3 oz. This morning's meal appears to have upset her belly again. She still has diarrhea but not as bad as yesterday. She does not want to eat tonight. I really wish that I had gone to the store last night for the probiotic. Now I have it but I cannot give it to her if she will not eat. Sigh.

I really hate to have her go without food and I am wondering what giving her Nutrical would do......

Should I leave her be tonight or try to give her a dose of Nutrical?

Have you tried Probiocin probiotic? It's a gel so you don't need to mix with food. Shango thinks this stuff is THE BEST treat ever lol! Too bad he can't have it as often as he'd like. He goes crazy when he sees me get it out of the fridge (you don't have to keep refrigerated though). I get it from my local vet, but saw chewy.com sells it for less.
