Thats what I thought as well Trish. I would like to start feeding raw though I am overwhelmed by it. Been reading A LOT. I don't want to do much now, until Spar's GI tract calms down. His sis Mala is VERY picky and that is a concern as well. Should I take them off all kibble ( they currently get nature's variety limited ingredient rabbit) to start? I have a difficult time with Mala, she won't eat much at once and it makes it difficult to have a "meal time". I an on feline-nutrition reading about transitioning and I just don't know if I could make this work. Is there a "dummies" guide? LOL

My friend fed 2 of our savannahs raw lamb. They got Coccidia Cryptosporidium...a common problem for both lambs and humans in New Zealand where the lamb came from. Of course there are all sorts of mechanisms to keep this from getting into your local grocery store but it is apparently not foolproof. Both my friend and both savannahs quickly became very very ill. One kitten almost didn't make it.

Whereas Cows, Sheep & Goats are the primary reservoir of this bug and whereas many herds have 50 - 100% infection rates it seems that most of the literature focuses on sensationalistic contamination in municipal water supplies; the lack of reporting on local beef or lamb contamination cases probably is best explained in a quote from a recent report:

"Food products have been associated with several outbreaks of cryptosporidiosis. Because most food borne
outbreaks are-usually considered to be-of bacterial or viral origin. the identification or Cryptosporidium
or other parasites is often delayed, making epidemiological and trace·back studies more-difficult.
Therefore, the number of food borne outbreaks of cryptosporidiosis is likely to be much higher than what
is currently reported"

In this case, the cause and effect were indisputable. Unfortunately, Dehydration was an obvious problem in this case as it is with most protazoa based dysentery. It was a rough two weeks but everyone involved has bounced back...in fact the kitten most severely affected is having a growth spurt!

Hm...I feed Zeddie lamb all the time. I will have to make sure we are careful...

All my raw goes in the freezer for a period of 2 weeks. That should kill most parasites.

My raw is bought frozen and has been frozen awhile. I just buy commercial raw

Hi guys,

We have a 7 mos old F6 SV. He has had runny stool issues on and off since we got him at 12 weeks. No other problems. 2 stool tests were negative and a round of metronidazole helped briefly. In the past 24 hrs he has gone to full on diarrhea, dripping everywhere and is confined to the bathroom. I took a very good stool sample ( stuck a pill bottle under his bottom and got it almost full) they found one oocyte in the sample. So he is on ponazuril for 4 days. First dose a couple of hours ago. I am watching him for dehydration but an wondering how long it will take for meds to get his diarrhea under control? Vet said 24 hrs. He's freaking out every time he leaks. Just wanted any advice available. Thanks!

My cat SV F7 had Giardia. Same symptoms but the stool was the most awful smell. She has been treated and tested negative. I need to retest her. . Her stools still smell(but not like originally) and are loose. I started her on pumpkin and it does help.
