Considering a Savannah F3 or F4 male

I am curious if there is a potential problem bringing a Savannah into home that has had domestic male cats in the home in the past? I lost my cat companion due to illness, he was famous for marking everything and everyone who came in by head rubbing or rolling. I know most cats would just mark over the spot by rubbing the spot. My cat was neutered, he never sprayed, even though he would go through the motions. Is there a potential problem where the Savannah may spray or pee to mark the territory?

I really don't think this will be an issue. I have two F3 brothers and a F5 female and a female DSH. The boys were the last to arrive. No problems in the spraying area.
Truly these are amazing cats. High activity levels and intelligence are hallmarks of the breed. Since most of us with older SV cats did not have the resources of this board, we bought for the spots. Then we bought for the personality, again, and again............. The kittens are delightful, the adults become your best buddy. We are not kidding how dog like they act.
As for aggression. I have only witnessed one event. The F5 female was attacked by a non household cat. The F3 male (gentle & shy) jumped in to defend his cousin. He meant business. That's the only time I saw blood drawn, and it was on a foreign cat, not the humans who interceded.

If he was marking via urine- yeah, I'd be worried. Rubbing his scent glands everywhere- no problem. Him peeing everywhere and then bringing in another cat- yeah, I'd be a bit worried.

Okay- I'll work on the other parts of your question.

Things to ME that are red flags- breeders who are not working to forward the breed (if they're breeding F5s-F6s and have NEVER set foot into a show hall, ask why),

Are you saying breeders that don´t go to shows aren´t working on forwarding the breed and therefore not showing should be a red flag for the buyer? Probably I got that one wrong, but wondering. BTW, I´m not showing and yet one of my kittens this season so far was very successful being shown only once compared to most other kittens shown several times, getting 6 out of 8 finals and currently still 9th place in the SV kitten rank...

I´m sorry my reply was within the quote which is confusing and I have no idea how I could make it work.

Here is the qote:

This is my answer:

I think Trish is your girl! She is a wonderful breeder and has a very gentle approach to socializing her kittens. And if I'm not mistaken, she should have just the right one for you.

Margitta- if I wanted to say breeders who are not showing are red flags- I would have come out and said- breeders who do not show are red flags. I said if breeders do not show- ask them why. It's not offensive to ask a question and to further inquire about the breeder and their goals.

If you want to know what I think in regard to forwarding the breed- these are questions I would ask (emphasis on I).

Ask if the breeder shows- if the breeder doesn't show, ask them why.

Ask if they are a member of the Savannah breed group- if they aren't, ask them why.

Ask them how long they've been involved with the breed- ask them what they expect out of their kittens. Are they trying to adhere to the breed standard? Do they not give a whit about the breed standard? (There are some out there that will tell you, I think the standard is foolish- I'm just looking to produce pets for a pet market- I'd run from them).

THESE are things I'd ask a breeder to see if they are involved with the breed and looking to forward the breed. They might have legitimate reasons not to show- they might have reasons why they aren't a member of the breed group- they might be newbies in the breed- but get them talking. It will give you a clearer idea as to what they are producing as well as whether they are trying to forward the breed or simply cash in on the breed.

AS ALWAYS- my posts are MY OPINIONS.

Let me second the lower generations don't forget. My f2 doesn't have a mean bone in her body, but apparently someone told her toilet paper could attack at any moment so she proatively kills it for us and saves the day. She has even learned to open the bathroom cabinet to get the rolls that are clearly laying in wait. So, a sense of humor is a must, and removing everything that normal people have under ther bathroom sink to keep them safe is also a must. I wonder what the Costco people are thinking when they view just how much toilet paper I buy, honestly! She can also turn on faucets, and when she wants to play fetch, she means now. But wow is she cool, and I never ever imagined having a cat so incredibly attached to me. I am still a new SV person, but wouldn't hesitate to tell someone getting an sbt is not settling at all, they are just as cool, just as breathtaking and (maybe) you won't have to store cleaning products in the attic or get flood insurance and buy stock in toilet paper. :)

For example, just got home from riding, hopped in the shower, thought it weird i wasn't being stalked in the shower as I normally am, and came out to this. Another victim. image.jpg

But get a SV, though, you won't regret that at all, regardless of generation, and soak up the collective knowledge on this board.
