Declawing and fixing

So I'm going to play devil's advocate on the declawing here...from the other side of the house. Beth's a professional ballerina, and she had to have surgery to reduce/remove toenails because the dancing on them constantly has deformed them to the point they grew in painfully. Other dancers have had the same thing done. Some even have their pinky toe removed so shoes fit better.

So people get declawed too...sort of.

Although cosmetically disfiguring this is not quite the same as having all of her toes amputated - I'm quite sure that would have ended her ballerina days...

I know declawing is illegal in Italy but I just heard this http://www.iizcat.com/post/4303/New-Jersey-to-become-the-first-state-to-ban-the-declawing-of-cats , I do not know if this is true but it is a start ,we do not declaw our cats , we do trim and supply scratching posts of different types.

NJ is anti breeder, but is going to ban declawing?

A coworker of mine told me about it the other day. Although I am not a fan of declawing, I am afraid that a lot of cats will go unadopted from the shelters and many cats will end up being euthanized.

I guess people can always drive out of state to have it done. It's not a far drive.

It's the governments role to protect those that cannot protect themselves. Neither ethics nor humanity have caused the practice to stop, and certainly the powers of free markets aren't working on behalf of cats nor kittens.

Well, the practice is not going to stop with any law...it is just going to force people to go right over the state line to NY or PA...

The answer lies in education. As long as the public refers to it as declawing instead of first digit amputations, we can expect people to continue doing it. Of course, there is that percentage of folks that know exactly what it is and insist on mutilating the cat anyway.

The role of government is to protect the individual rights of its citizens - not to take those rights away by telling people what they can or cannot do with their possessions (aka pets).

I hate declawing as well, but the passing of this law is just one more feather in the ARs' hats.
