I think there are situations outside of convenience that go towards a declaw decision. I personally would rather declaw than rehome. I know with my big ol' DSH, when he was a kitten he was CRAZY! Bad breeding, bad parenting, and we didn't know much about cats at the time. The vet recommended euthanasia when we took him in a 6 months to be neutered because he was uncontrollable. Luckily he wasn't THAT bad at home...but he bit and would "claw" us. We got him declawed during his neuter because of his personality. If he hadn't been declawed, there is absolutely no way he would have been able to be rehomed, and he would have had to be put down.

But you know better now...there are many other ways to help crazed kittens and to keep them from clawing...when I was younger with kittens, I didn't have a place like this to go to for advice...

This has nothing to do with animal "rights." AR wants nobody to have pets or adopt any animals. They're happier euthanizing animals than adopting them out.

If you adopt an animal, you have a responsibility to that animal. Making it suffer for your convenience--especially when alternatives are possible--is not fulfilling your responsibility to that animal. If you don't have the time or patience to train or groom nails, then you probably shouldn't adopt a pet or be responsible for an animal.
Well, I'd disagree- you are walking a line on AR/AW when it comes to taking over decisions for owners- like declawing, crops, etc (AR is animal rights- AW is animal welfare- I know we are all AW's here, but just for the sake of the conversation). When you continuously remove owner's rights- you are pushing more into AR territory versus AW.

Do I think people should declaw? Once again, no, but I think that really- more vets need to talk owners out of it versus into it.

BUT- here- beat me with a big, big stick- I SO love a nice crop on a Dobie or Dane! LOOOVE IT.

(I'm bad, I admit it!)

You know that when writing an email or anything else online, it is difficult to discern sometimes what a person actually means...you can't see his/her face or emotions, which makes it that much more difficult...

but we are all here for the same reason and we get over it...so never worry about that...

Oh definitely! I love my DSH like crazy, but it wasn't until I started researching Savannahs and found this forum that I really realized there are a ton of options. Definitely wouldn't do it the same. I feel bad for the poor guy

Was actually just trying to defuse, but failed miserably.

nah, you did not fail...what people may not know is Per is a veterinarian and many people have very strong feelings when it comes to declawing...just like people have very strong feelings when it comes to letting cats outside...

Oh, I'm fully expecting Per to spank me for my pro-crop views. Usually, Europeans are very anti-crop.

Well, Per may not be into that kinda hanky panky. Hahahah.

I jest, I jest!
