Does Walking a Savannah Cat Lead to Escapes

LOL...Tojo is such a doll! Sometimes Taj will smack me on the leg when I walk past him, if I have scolded him...just like a little toddler

I never walked Solo and he does not dart out the door. I started walking Kronos and he has walked out the door on his own a few times, not dart because he did not know it was not allowed. Since those few escapes he has made I have been very hesitant about walking him. I still sometimes take him in the car and then talk him at the pet store or elsewhere, but since I have stopped walking him he does not try to go out on his own anymore.

I conclude that yes, walking your cat does make them want to be outside constantly, and once they learn they cannot go out on their own will when the door is open, they will dart out every chance they get to avoid capture.

Solution: take kitty outside in a crate and dis-associate going out the door with going on walks, but going in the crate = goin on a walk.

I was pondering this question last night when Taj ran out my front door at night, up an embankment near traffic and scared me almost to death. it is a steep embankment with huge boulders, but he loves to climb on boulders when I am walking him, so I was not surprised.

He was found quickly because he knows where he lives and never goes far, but...he could have been hit by a car...he just wants to be outside.

I have been walking him since he was a kitten. he loves to be walked. Zuri does not really like to be walked, so she never runs out...she loves to be in her enclosure.

So I wonder if walking savannah cats outside gives them a propensity to want to run out or if some cats just run out to be out...

What do you think?

I do not walk my cats, except for the ones that are therapy cats, they have no idea of what a leash and outside is. I believe that they do develop a propensity to want out. I know many people, including my own buyers who walk their Savannahs, but I advise against the same. I know I am in the minority opinion for feeling this way, but Marilyn Kreiger also advises against it for my reasons and others. I am just glad Taz is home safe and sound.

I don't think that I want to take the boys out locally. I think I would prefer to take them out to the pet store and to parks. There are several parks near where they have walking paths and allow pets. I hoping they will associate outside with their carrier and being carried through garage and then to the car and never make the association with the doors. Though Abu was sitting in front of the sliding glass door this morning watching the birds in the back yard. I really would like for them to get the exercise and fresh air. Please share your thoughts if you think this may be enough to disassociate them ... to stop them from becoming door dashers ... I don't worry about Zues much ... but Abu well he is prolly braver than he should be.

I was actually just thinking about that this morning, Rob. Maybe taking Taj in the car to the reservation and walking him on the path...good for me and good for him
