Dooley still challenged

Dooley is doing better and we transferred him to Metropolitan Veterinary Hospital where he can get the best of care. What we found at the emergency vets mid day was much different than what was described to us in the morning. He was alert and attentive with a reasonable respiratory rate.

While Dooley is not out of the woods by any stretch, he's in better hands. The complexities of Dooley's case are far more than the emergency vet is staffed for.

We have some options for housing Dooley when he's released. Not sure how we'll manage things but we are working on it.

That's all I have for now, besides a suddenly lap f1 cat named Dino. Thanks for the thoughts and prayers, they mean a great deal to us.

Well John, the prayers will keep coming from this direction. I feel like Dooley is one of my family too. Love to You, Trish and the furkids. Tell Dino the Savannah world is working to bring Dooley home healthy.

I'm in to keep the prayers going. Can't imagine and don't want to. If there is anything else we can do let us know.

Just an update.

Dooley did well overnight and Dr Carothers brought in some spinach to earn some trust and friendship. He ate some reduced protein food to reduce the load on his liver and make sure he is processing things correctly. She isn't against feeding Dooley a raw diet, just wanted known variables on her end and if it comes to pass that he will continue to need reduced protein she will help us formulate his raw diet.

The bile acid test results that were performed at the emergency vet have not been sent along yet. Given what a bad experience we had there yesterday, I'm not sure they will be valid. My guess is they'll perform them again with better control.

Anyway, I feel pretty fortunate that Dooley is recovering and it looks like we are going to make arrangements for him to stay at my sisters house. That's a far cry from what I was presented at the emergency clinic where they said his prognosis was poor and asked me about resuscitation.

Last thing is I was wondering if anyone could comment on home allergen testing labs. Dr Google has revealed hundreds of them but I'm guessing only a handful of them are reputable and provide valid results.

That's it for now, and I'll post again later when I get the afternoon evening update.

John, I am so happy to hear this news. I shall continue the prayers and good wishes. I also feel that Dooley staying at your sister's will be good but I am concerned Dino will not understand. Many years ago, I had a problem with an emergency vet here. ( before Savannahs) So I do not put a lot of faith into their diagnoses. Anyway so glad the present Vet paints a much more optimistic picture. Love to you all. :)

Thanks much Cary!

Here's some additional information I have gathered. We know Dooley has some asthma issues, although there has always been something additional that has caused him distress. In our area of the country allergy season has started about 30 days before normal. Not only has it started early, but pollen and mold counts have been higher than normal.

Here's a 30 day pollen count for where we live.

I've also mentioned before that we are right on top of our MetroPark System. The prevailing winds blow out of the Northwest, down the river valley which has 75-100 foot cliffs on each sides about a quarter mile apart. Our home is at the furthest west part of this corridor and all the winds that pour off the lake and through the woods make their way up right by our home (lower right hand corner).

While there is some relevance, it still doesn't explain all that is going on with Dooley. Hopefully there will be continued progress tomorrow, and on Monday Dooley's case will be viewed by the internal medicine staff at the hospital in their entirety.

Our hearts are heavy while hoping for the best for our little boy. Dino is missing him as well and needs to be on top of someone every waking moment.

Thanks again for the thoughts and prayers!

It's a relief to hear that Dooley is doing better! I'm afraid I don't know anything about home allergen testing, but I do know what I have been told - that most cats will trigger positive for so many different allergies that the results are often useless since it could take months or even years to weed out all the allergens to find the one that is actually causing the issue. I think relocating him, although a heartbreaking decision for you, may be your best option for him. Hopefully he will thrive at your sisters and all of this can be put behind you!
