Dooley still challenged

One other note, given the make up of our cats, especially f1s, I would be extra cautious about the amount of protein they consume. Not that any of it should be replace by carbs, but lean meats aren't a good route to travel. Best to have near half the calories they intake come from fat.

Very excited to hear about Dooley's progress!!!!!

When feeding a cat a low fat protein such as quail or rabbit, how do you increase fat if chicken skin/fat is not an option?

Hmmm, I thought I posted something Friday.

Dooley continues to improve, his weights up to 20.8lbs, coat well groomed eyes clear. He's at 60% his modified raw diet and 40% hills petscription k/d. By months end we are hoping that he can be carb free.

He still does display some tremors in his front legs which seem to be a side effect of the Keppra. There isn't any ties to meal times, so that's a positive. Can only make a single change at a time, and given that he had lost nearly 25% of his weight it was important to get his calories up first without any neurological signs.

Many thanks to Dr Lisa Pierson and her help with Dooley's diet. We've now made the second change and I'm pretty well armed to make changes going forward until I add a second protein. Just need to make sure we keep the percentage of calories from protein in the 30-35% range.

Thanks again for all the well wishes, not sure I would have believed how far we've came since June.

I'm so glad to hear that Dooley is continuing to improve, and that he's putting some of his weight back on - yay Dooley!!!

Dooley went to visit his regular vet on Friday. I made the mistake of taking him and his brother together and they performed about as poorly as possible. I know better, just squeezed for time and I had been away in Germany for a week and a half, so trying to be efficient with my time.

It's funny how they feed off of one another, and they can work themselves into a frenzy in a heartbeat.

Dooley literally lifted the 90lb vet tech off the ground when he decided he didn't want his temperature checked. This has never been an issue in the past, and going slow with him is about all you need to do to have success. Not this day, finding success knocking art off the wall, getting his brother charged up and the vet tech reason to strap herself to the floor next time he visits.

So next is Dino who is already a load and he's just not going to cooperate today. I offer my assistance and before I can comfort him he clamps down hard on my finger. Blood everywhere and the all time worst trip to the vet I've ever been part of.

Anyway, they get me cleaned up, Dino calms down after getting his ounce of flesh and both cats are in good shape. Dooley continues to do well, having put on some more weight and is now back up to date on the shots he's missed over the last 6 months. A couple weeks out from some bigger tests and hopefully a reduction of Med's, but I couldn't be happier with how far he has come over the summer.

Ugh. That stinks, John.
I know how your feel.
If it makes you feel any better, D, my normally well behaved boy, took a chunk out of our vet several years ago, when Jarvis (who D doesn't like- but strangely will protect) screamed bloody murder when the vet gave him a shot. It took about a year and a nice bottle of wine, we had been forgiven.
Then little baby Rey, on our last trip to the vet, scaled the tech to get on top of the cabinets ... She is the only one of our bunch who won't let me clip her nails, so yeah. I fired up the I'm sorry train. I retrieved the kitty, apologized at length while D growled at me (Rey is his favorite), and thinking the drama was done, wrapped her in her blanket and handed her to the tech.
Then, Diablo got mad, and when the tech brought her back from blood work, calmly walked up to the tech and serval smacked her.
So yeah...
Sending you and Dino and Dooley hugs and hopes that the next visit goes Better.

I am glad that Dooley is doing better.....and I think that the vet tech is glad as well! Do I need to consider doing a blood sacrifice for Rafiki to do better?
